Damn. That's impressive. Killer vocalist and players. I've just listened on laptop...and it's indistinguishable...this makes me realize that all this converter talk is a little silly.

mmmm youtube audio compression AAC 192 is actually decent quality and that what YT used to play back audio at. However now after researching this subject it appears YT has in fact reduced the audio quality across the whole site to prevent piracy and save bandwidth to 128 AAC for stereo... yikes like hugging audio examples from SoundCloud π

Great stuff. There were a few differences in volume and brightness here and there but nothing that would make me say that Unison doesn't work. Of course I am in full confirmation bias mode because I am setting up a small studio with 2 Apollo's and spending the preamp money on microphones. I will definitely get some pre's soon (so please put all your old pre's on reverb.com and flood the market :-) ) but for the moment I want to give this a shot, see how it comes together.

Man the de esser is crushing Gannon voice wow he is sibilant... cool how they have the singer using a verb and delay mic for the spice and Sm7 Vox mic for the lead. Is Jacquire really clipping converters into PT π±?
What the hell happened at 1:58 to the audio yikes that hurt my ears
421 for kick and snare?
What does Gannon mean when he says tone of the plugins? he says you get the sound of the Unison but also the tone of the plugin? Why would a plugin have a tone ( I don't mean like a note say A 440hz or tone generator ) I think he is trying to compare gain staging of a plugin vs driving an output transformer of a Neve. Don't know if I want plugins imparting tone I can't control is what I am saying..
Def heard a decent difference at 3:30 for the kick and snare, Apollo plugs sound like a blanket on top of the drums " trying to sound vintage " maybe that is the "tone" Gannon speaks of? My bias may have small influence but I am heavily invested into UAD so my bias should be with them and not $3500 pieces of mono comp gear π«π
For the bass the levels are not even close to being matched peak or RMS. The last UAD bass part is at least 1.5 Db louder.. Did anyone see how hot they recorded the drums... Tippy top of the yellow?

I own the SM7, 1073, chain and I can hear and recognize the difference, especially in the tails. But what does it matter really.... especially today. It bothers me that manufacturers use these famous producers to "sell" this stuff like Viagra. It feels slightly exploitative and insulting. What is the point of these "shootouts". It's not aimed at the 1% of guys who make records for a living, they aren't dumping their hardware. I'm assuming it's aimed at the average lay person, musician, small studio, and the message is this will make "someone's demos" sound 4% better. Who can really hear the difference? and what does that infinitesimal amount matter if you aren't making records for a living?
Now that the bottom has dropped out of their industry it feels like manufacturers are increasingly taking advantage of people. They know 80% of their customers have no professional need for what they are selling.
Pro Audio is becoming like Wilson Combat. Buy a bunch of expensive shit you will never need, and never use. The current state of computer audio is already more than good enough for 99% of the people who will use it. And the other 1% who are making records for a living (even though they are increasingly one man operations) aren't about to sell off all of their hardware. The only guys who professionally need that subtle difference between a vintage 1073 and a plugin will keep the outboard gear to make sure they can steal work away from Jacquire. LOL
If you want to sell us middle aged men a bunch of shit we "really don't need" don't blow smoke up our ass. Just say... "this shit is cool, it's like the real M16s the Seals carry in actual combat" and it's fun to own.

Sorry what is pro audio? If it sounds good and it was a kid with a laptop... fine. The story must be told diffrent, why dont we hear newcommers everyday?
The reason you also need to have skills in writeing and arrangeing most people give up early because useing a few apple loops gives them the feeling they composed something....
For the rest I love useing real knobs .... yes those comparsions are stupid, they just show that uad is in trouble. Some hardware of today is cheap and good sounding, more and more laymans buy also hardware. If you read the other blue website you can see that they also love to talk about real gear, its getting more and more. Touching something is a part of the human nature...

I feel like if you put a very subtle high and low pass on the digital tracks they would sound exactly the same.

Again they split the signal with a TRANSFORMER which took the load, phase, and impedance interaction OUT of the microphones and preamps so in essence you were only getting a converter duplication of a sound with almost no color or character from the preamps...
And the hardware is still much more alive and bright and has air.. The plug is small dull and murky.

I agree the air is missing from the plugin. It is particularly noticeable on the lead vocal even in the mix. Also I felt like there was a bit of buildup in the mids on the apollo. I have the BF so it would be great if the Apollo was indistinguishable from the real deal.. But the Apollo gets the job done with some extra outboard.

Like the other video shoot out I posted, I am impressed by this.
Sure, I hear a difference... but its quite small, all things considered....and as I said last time.. if I walked in cold on either, wouldnt bat an eyelid and want to retrack.
I don't know, I don't come at it from a hardware defensive position, which in some ways I should, I am surrounded by it....8)
I would have to try it to be sure, but I think this would be close enough for me.... if there was some way to physically interact with this stuff without a mouse/trackpad/touch screen.
I am just a different engineer when I am turning knobs and patching gear, than I am with a mouse.... seriously.
But, I think the shoot out was well done, about as realistic as it could be, and sounds pretty damn close, not even considering the price differential.
cheers

Well wiz the apollo twin and all the apollo rotary control if depressed for 2 seconds then become a pre controller and interact directly with the on board apollo pres and have some dedicated functionality per pre/plug in parametres as well. You can cycle through all the on board apollo pres this way, then click out and use the rotary as your monitor controller too
You can rack your apollo 8 and get a twin and use it as a desktop controller too over tbolt.

"...I am just a different engineer when I am turning knobs and patching gear, than I am with a mouse.... seriously..." cheers Wiz Regardless of how good simulations become it's still the hands on feel that is missing IMO. Yes some will say just get a DAW control surface etc. but the subtle tactile feedback of dialling in a sound on a piece of analog hardware is still not easy to convincingly nail and for me and using a mouse is like have a conversation with someone on the other side of a glass wall via an intercom.

Interesting. but what I meant was, say 1176... I spin both knobs with two hands at once... parametric EQ on the console I can adjust cut/boost and freq at once...neither of which requires mathematical brain power or "eyes"... that's honestly where I feel the difference lies. just MHexperience though...other would function better. With the mouse. cheers Wiz

No probs was just curious as one can control ua unison pres and plugs in real time with the rotary controller so was wondering if someone had done some serious multi tracking?
I have a faderport 8 from which you can map ua plug control but I also have the softube console 1 and it's 3 channel strips and you can certainly be tweaking multiple parameters with both Hands so that future is here now.
it's like real ob but I think the real ob still feels more immediate ?

I think it's a really interesting comparison. Basically just showing that what "we" have at home, is pretty adequate compared to what "they" have at work. The grass is very slightly greener, but really not that much.
I still feel that buying software feels like Lent, and buying hardware more often like Easter.
But it's not this great divide like it used to be.

Β Kind of the opposite of what you said. Hmmm interesting. Maybe shaving off the extremes allows headroom for the fundamental stuff to come through clearer? Maybe we are not opposites, but walking the same path in different directions?
