Another cohort of mine was scoffing at the Showman, inexplicably, and I was like, uh, Paul McCartney, bro. Paul McCartney? I've heard of him. He did this tune... lolololololololololol I must be getting old. I knew the hook from that song, but had never listened to the whole thing, or watched the video. The part where Kanye was just glaring directly at the camera made me twitch a little bit. I was a bout four or five seconds from wiling. I like this trend of no bass and no drums when appropriate. Frank Ocean does that a lot, too.

I've never been a huge fan but lately I've been moving further and further away from using Bass DI's. 6 months ago I was tracking the cab and muting the DI, the last full band session I didn't even record the DI. I'm aware from doing some recording bass in my small room at home that it's hard to get an even bass sound from a small room, but god damn it do I hate the sound of a DI. Even the low-pass DI, hi-pass amp trick just isn't as good as a mic'd bass cab on its own. Especially for rock-style playing. I'd consider re-amping a DI when going back to the big room for tracking and then deleting the DI when that arises in the future. Anyone with me? I have three killer DIs. Groove Tube Brick and Ditto and the instrument input on my Millennia Media STT-1. I have never had a bass player say anything but "Wow! I've never heard my bass sound this good." Regards, Ty Ford

Regards, Ty Ford One of the worst DI boxes I've ever tried was the BBE one. It turned anything you put into it to rotten cheese. I got so mad I sent them back the next day. Really made me appreciate my nice DI options that I do have. I'm talking to myself as a soldering engineer like, "Man, you have got to try really hard to make a DI, any DI, sound that bad!"

I feel like I'm still experimenting when it comes to recording bass, but my latest chain is my American standard jazz, into an Xotic bass ac booster, 1073, and then 1176. The ac booster has really made the difference for me. It adds just that hair of harmonic content that allows the midrange to speak, while boosting the lows for punch, and the highs if needed for clarity. The 1073 takes it like a champ and the 1176 helps hold it all together. I'll only mic an amp if it's a punk rock thing.

Tracking basics last night the bassist was using a Jazz through a Fender combo he brought. I just took a DI, Tyoe 85 > ACMP81 > HM2 Nail. The player sat on the combo and I had the volume up just enough to use it as a butt kicker, same room as the drums with a gobo between. We talked about miking, but I was really after a solid drum track and didn't feel the combo brought anything I couldn't better with the three tube bass rigs in the room and a reamp later. It was a busy bass part and after the first take I knew I'd be bringing him back after some guitars and vocals were layered to "add some space" for other elements. DI rules in that capacity. When I reamp the finished bass track, it's usually to multiple amps and at a volume that's hard to isolate.
