I've never been a huge fan but lately I've been moving further and further away from using Bass DI's. 6 months ago I was tracking the cab and muting the DI, the last full band session I didn't even record the DI. I'm aware from doing some recording bass in my small room at home that it's hard to get an even bass sound from a small room, but god damn it do I hate the sound of a DI. Even the low-pass DI, hi-pass amp trick just isn't as good as a mic'd bass cab on its own. Especially for rock-style playing. I'd consider re-amping a DI when going back to the big room for tracking and then deleting the DI when that arises in the future.
Anyone with me?

Personally if it weren't for the ampeq models in amplitube then I'd be boned!

Never a fan. Occasionally it sounds pretty good, but it's rare. I don't track one usually.

90% of my work is location recording where all musicians play together so DI bass and double bass is a must.
I prefer DI bass over bass amp mic.
Last week I plugged a standard BSS DI box on electric bass and did not like tone at all. Player found an EBS preamp pedal with DI output and wow what a difference!
When recording double bass beside a loud drummer DI is mandatory and a dynamic mic or ribbon for some wood sound. Then amp modeling, convolution early reflections and dynamic eq.
Very good quality passive DI over active DI hands down.
Very good quality preamp pedal/rack over passive DI box.
I do the opposite: DI bass for mid/highs fingers and definition and amp mic for lows and weight

Check out the ZOD ID DI. Tube DI from Dan Deurloo. Might change your opinion of DI bass....

I like both, haha. But for playing/practicing, I just gotta have an amp in the room. Way more involving. For laying down a part, DI is fine for a lot of my stuff. Using the SansAmp or Ampeg SCR-DI it's sort of six of one, half dozen of the other.
I like my 251 in supercardioid on the bass cabinet, that's a really nice sound.

I just bought one of these: www.ampeg.com/products/portaflex/pf-20t/Combined with a nice cab (though no cab is required because of the dummy load), it kind of provides the best of both worlds. I haven't been able to compare it to the Zod, which I had initially set out to buy instead, but this all-tube Ampeg sounds great. It has TWO DI outputs, post-preamp AND post-power amp, which can be used simultaneously. It's really flexible and sounds great. I can mic up my 15" Ampeg cab, run a nice distorted DI line post-power amp and run a cleaner DI post-preamp to use for reamping ALL at the same time. Pretty cool stuff. They also make the pf50t which is a 50 watt version and has more eq options.

Sometime my REDDI is perfect, but if I need more growl I add an amp sim. Wish I could afford an Ampeg- like the Ampeg PF-20T mentioned by Quint above- where I could overdrive it's tube distortion out through the transformer to go along with the REDDI.

Check out the ZOD ID DI. Tube DI from Dan Deurloo. Might change your opinion of DI bass.... I have all these old octal tube preamps of a zillion varieties, you can pull the grid cap off the 1st tube and attach an external grid cap to it to have a high-Z/DI input. I've tried all of them. Better, but I still don't dig it most of the time. Great for keys though. Acoustic bass with drums, yeah probably got to use one and process the crap out of it. Mic on the bass doubles as a room mic.

I gotta say i use just the DI even though i mivht record the amp too probably half the time but its completely dependent on the material. I use a tube DI but also the Warm wa12. During mixdown its a Pultec into Waves Cla3a. Sometimes Klanghelm.

For me it pretty much always depends on context; I'll go with whatever seems to serve the music best. I pretty much always record a DI track, but what I might find myself DI-ing into is probably going to play a big part in the decision to use it or not. I definitely dig the sound of my fretless through an 18" W-cabinet but gotta say; I have a hard time disliking the sound of a good sounding bass DI'd into a Great River NV too.

Could you not just sell the Reddi and get the Ampeg instead? The pf20t sells for $600 new, which puts it in the same price range as the Reddi or Zod. I bought mine as a demo item from Sweetwater for $400. I kind of came to the conclusion that, with the Ampeg, I could get all of the tone and functionality of the Reddi or Zod in addition to having an actual full blown all tube bass amp. For the price it was a win win as far as I'm concerned. It's a perfect little bass amp for recording. Oh, and as a bonus, depending on how hard you drive it, you may not even need to run the DI signal through a preamp. It puts out a pretty strong signal.

I was prepared to send it back if I didn't like it but I've been really happy with it. It's got a nice growl when you want it. There's a lot of good info here: www.talkbass.com/threads/hot-ampeg-news-pf20t-pf50t-pf112hlf.1173019/Here's some demos showing the sounds from the three different outputs for each of three different styles/tones.

I hardly ever use a bass DI for recording anymore. Used to use a Countryman, stopped about 4 or 5 years ago. Have an A-Designs KGB-II which is a really nice 2 channel preamp-DI, but don't really use it on bass much. I have an early '60s Ampeg B18 with a JBL K-151 speaker (Alnico magnet) that sounds great.

The DI on my Galien Kruger 700rb sounds pretty awesome. I record with it all the time. It might be the only reason I've kept the amp because other than that, I'm not in love with it.
