Wow. I really, really love what this thing can do. I'm just scratching the surface, but I'll go into more depth here soon.

I have been using constantly as well! It has been used on about 15 records in mastering if that says anything! Quite a genius invention....

I'm watching the Stanley Cup right now, but I just briefly sang through the 251--Stam 73--Sta-Level--Zulu...and MAN, listening through my headphones, it tooooootallly seeme to smooth out the top end...I'm gonna post a comparison later tonight. I really hope what I'm hearing in the phones translates to the DAW.

Cool files but same link, I swear I heard some differences at first haha You don't need no dam bricasti 😀🤘 a little 7H or Slate Verb and you are good! Hey setup your best reverbs on this vocal and ask drbill or drsax or porkyman or swurveman to run your file thru the Bricasti for you! Oh looks like I just tagged n asked them all for you 😀

How did you decide on Zulu settings - was that through trial and error or is there something a bit more scientific? Haven't had much chance to play too much with mine yet, but interested in other peeps settings.

Haven't had much chance to play too much with mine yet, but interested in other peeps settings. Yeah...I'm still figuring it out myself. The gain staging has been a little confusing to me. With this I went Upton--Stam73--Sta--Zulu. I have my sta output pretty cranked and it still comes in pretty low. If I were to turn the Enhance knob all the way down (CC), it would be super low. The Bias is the top end, so I wanted to roll that off. I noticed that with this particular chain, the MX Cal seemed to impart the best amount of saturation without distortion. To me, it definitely "smoothed" out the mic. Not as pointed in the mids. Just more pleasant. I'm wondering if I should track normally and then use the Zulu after to print...That way I'm not re-learning all of my gain staging while tracking.

Sounds great Johnkenn - Zulu definitely changes the gain staging, but I'm pretty surprised in a good way about how many options it brings. I find I personally like the bias around 9 o'clock on most things, and the enhance at about 10 or 11o'clock and then makeup the gain with either Outboard or even digitally. The calibration settings change the sound so much. It's cool having the options. Sometimes I like it more saturated, but generally im really diggin just a light touch - it adds a type of sheen and smoothness that is very tapelike and is different from other outboard gear I have

Johnkenn - have you tried your Zulu between your Stam73 and STA? You could turn up the STA input to recover the gain loss of Zulu.

Thanks Brad - not lame at all - get a benchmark then tweak either way if you want, but know where you can come back to if you need -bit like setting up a race bike.
I'll have a read up on how to calibrate gear. Cheers.

On my headphones, it sounded to me like the Zulu file was squeezed tight and lower in volume, so I tried them on my monitors. Gotta say I don't see any reason to jump on this, it really didn't sound better to me, just different. In the back of my head, I love the idea of the Zulu, so if anything, I was rooting for it to be a winner. Make a track with and without the UAD ATR-102 on the Smooth Vocal preset, or the 30 ips Mastering preset, cut the noise off, and you'll hear a nice improvement too.
Is the Zulu better than that? I'd love to hear more comparisons before making any real judgements.
Thanks for doing this John.

Here is a soundcloud link to a quick comparison I did on a stereo drum buss mix. Zulu Drum Buss Comparison
Keep in mind that these are all matched at a peak volume of -2dB but the RMS varies per track. These are just a small sampling of the types of sounds ZULU is capable of. I've also used ZULU on Vox and Sax with beautiful results. Those projects are not released commercially yet. Also - this is ZULU by itself. By using mic pres or other outboard on either side of ZULU, the sound and options are nearly unlimited. I just kept it simple to hear the sound of ZULU purely by itself. The original Drum Mix is posted also. *Note that the specific Zulu settings are in the filename of each track

I must say I really like the in my own use Zulu....
You have to work with it to feel what it does... I have mixed and mastered a bunch of tracks with this box with great result. The thing I would say is that the fatiguing quality I hear from digital is helped greatly when used on the 2 bus. It relaxes my ears... This in combination with a Silver Bullet is the Sh!t....
