I have heard the SR25, thought it sounded really good on acoustic, anyone else want to talk about Earthwork mics and their experience?

Henry Hey had a pair that he had with him on a session I engineered and wanted to try them out on the piano. As I remember they were omni. They sounded fantastic.
You can see the placement of them in this vid. I'm sure he'd sound great with any mics honestly, he has a great touch.

Had a pair of SR30's for a couple of years, detailed but no personality or dimension, don't really miss them.

Had tc30k's years ago, they didn't work with any transformer coupled pre, nor even a transformer splitter in parallel with direct connection to a pre they did work with. Kinda felt dpa 4060 sounded as good with less noise. Sold them. I hear they may have eventually fixed the transformer issue. At the time I had them there had only been the OM1 and then tc30k/tc40k. Cardioid hadn't come out yet. Haven't heard (or seen) one in 15 years.

I sent them back thinking they were broken, only to be told they worked just fine.. I got them back and SQUEEEEEL.. So I consulted the WWW and found many folks having issues with that model and transformer pres.. I plugged them into some solid state preamps and they were fine. I ended up selling them a while later though. I do remember them being a little high noise.

Yeah, once I tried a Jensen mic splitter in parallel across the line and that made them fail, I soured considerably.
I love the story from Plush over at that purple site; tossing them out a car window after hearing a (supposedly) BS laden talk from the company owner.

I have an Avenson STO-2 that I will once-in-a-while use to capture ambience and room tones on loud instruments.
I know it's not an Earthworks, but it was only $200 so I keep it around.

I've heard good things about them, but never used them myself. In a lot of ways I'm probably a target customer since I record classical music with small-diaphragm omnis. But when I think of mics in that category, it's either Schoeps or DPA. I'd expect that's the same for a lot of others.

I knew David Blackmer (founder of DBX and Earthworks and credited with inventing the VCA) and had many talks with him about his design philosophy. Certainly he was no bullshitter , just the opposite, he was an extremely brilliant man. Perhaps Plush heard a talk by someone who inherited the company when he died. Though I could appreciate his intent I thought they were a bit boring when compared with Brüel & Kjaer and Sennheiser MKH mics.

David Blackmer sent me a pair of the original Earthworks to audition/comment when they first came out. David was an AES fellow and legendary designer, anyone that dismisses that is just wrong.
My recollection was the mics had a wide frequency response with a tad of that electret stridency in the tops. The noise floor made them useless here except for high SPL sources. Apparently the tiny capsules and their low output made the noise a factor. Even very low noise jfets and bipolar transistors would not overcome that limitation.

We have a pair of M30s that are used for a few purposes. Schnider disk room mics, sometimes on fiddle, and it can work really well wrapped in foam and tucked between the bridge feet of an upright bass.
They're pretty useful if you have a full studio and need diversity. Certainly not a desert island mic. (That would go to my KM84s or Flea 47.)
