The UA reviews remind me of what people think of Budweiser beer, hehe. They are just a monster in the market at this point.
I can very happily say I'm not clamoring for too many new plugins these days. Also a happy Apollo user.
The strength of plugins and interfaces to me is supporting my mics and hardware. I think placing a ton of emphasis on the interface and the box creates a lot of noise, just due to expecting so much out of it. They can only do so much, but what they can do is pretty amazing. I would advise to diversify the hardware palette to take a little pressure off the box.

I'm still tempted by the Zener plug and now maybe this SSL...haven't tried it yet, though.

Zener didn't knock me out, but I didn't spend lots of time with it. I had a coupon deadline, and chose the API2500 over it. The API is a little heavy handed, but I've heard that sound on a lot of commercial country albums, so it might prove really useful for you John.

Peeps at UA Forum seem to be really blown away by the new SSL comp.

I didn't really care for the API2500...I kind of judge them from listening to the on the Drum Bus and seeing how they sound when pushed. The Zener could get this beautifully nasty crush...the 2500 just kinda went smack.

No, just what the hell in the sense of throwing caution to the wind, as some think there is nothing new in this plug, when there obviously is As a minimum, it has 2-3 extra features. I enjoyed the examples as the sound styles were very different but you could really hear the plug working well I liked how in example 2, you could hear the transient of the kick coming through and the glue of the comp above that in the mix.

There are 3, yes 3 ( three ) versions of this plug which you havent seem to realize this whole time. There is the: 4k buss comp SSL G Bus Comp Legacy New SSL G Bus comp mk2 -> Mix knob , SCF, etc Have a good day bro

The mixing with Mike video he crushes like -8 to -10 Db😫😂 In fact, in a few of his SSL Bus comp vids he shows this type of GR and workflow for using this comp.. Needless to say I was waiting on him to crank up the GR in this vid 🤠 viciousbliss Watch at 15:30 on: He uses .3 attack and smashes like -10db of GR lol... he also eventually uses the mix knob like I recommended to blend back in the loss of the dynamics.. Mixing with Mike has several Bus Comp vids like this with several diff plugs search his channel up there are some gems 💎 👍 m.youtube.com/channel/UCJzDevrdpVygTa0i3ajd62A

bit of a digression
just saw a Stam FB post in which Joshua is asking people if they would like a mix knob and a frrq specific filter on the front panel of the stam4k mkii and power switch moved to back ?
I said yes and asked if he would also make this a mod for mki owners.

This speaks to the general situation regarding plug-ins. Once you have dozens, there are only going to be a couple here and there you really need, and a only a few more you want. I wouldn't mind a Softube EQ, Melodyne, and a better De-esser, but I'm OK with the ones I have. As for UAD, they have so many plug-ins already, it has already reached the saturation point. In Logic, Apple's plug-ins are good enough that you can make pro tracks with them alone. Then there are many free plugs around, I must have a dozen useful free plugs. Hi end reverbs are everywhere, Relab, Slate, Liquid Sonics, Exponential, etc., so you don't need a UAD reverb. Their plates have been bested by others now. Where I've found UAD essential was in the ATR-102 and the Ocean Way. Even that may change, the LiquidSonics 7th Heaven may become my "main room" sound instead of the Ocean Way, (we'll see), but the point is, they're becoming less and less essential ever day. My hope is UAD does two things, one, begin innovating and creating new designs instead of modeling ever more obscure pieces of hardware, and that they start competing in the hardware market too. I think they would do well to build and create new products, and lower costs on their classic hardware. Bill Putnam was an innovator, and I hope UAD finds their way back to thinking forward, like he did. Oh, and as good as the Apollo is, they should offer a premium upgrade, so the conversion can compete with products like the Symphony. I like the sound of a Symphony enough that if I could afford it, I'd get a symphony, sell my Apollo 8, and use the satellite for their plugs, even if it meant a few less instantiations. I concur 100%. I haven't bought a UAD plugin in a while (BX-20 was the last one) and I really don't have any interest in buying anymore unless something really good comes along that is useful in real-time on the Apollo (and I may be moving away from Apollo anyway). As far as mixing goes, there are just way too many good native (how about Acqua?) plugins out there these days that don't require dedicated and expensive dsp. As for tracking, current computer speeds and the mainstreaming of TB/ethernet mean that, at, bare minimum, things like reverb/delay, you can deal with the minimal degree of latency for reverb/delay sends through the PC for monitoring. Plus, the prices these days for good quality but affordable hardware eqs and compressors means that I'd rather just end up spending my money on that to use for tracking and/or mixdown rather than buying more plugins. Yeah, I know UA has amp sims and what not but the ever increasingly cheap price of actual physical amps which have dsp modeling makes me care less and less. I can buy (Vox for example) a modeling amp (or two or three for live band tracking) for peanuts and have something that will never be subject to latency or OS/software bullshit. Run a DI for a duplicate naked track and then reamp through whatever nice (real) amps you have or can get a hold of. Long story short, UA needs to refocus their efforts on a few things. 1. Upgrade their conversion offerings. I love my 2192. They should make something like that again. 2. Upgrade/innovate their hardware offerings, which have also fallen behind and haven't changed in some time. Where's a new La3a offering? Crickets... There are a bunch of hardware clones out there these days that are as good or better than the UA stuff and for a cheaper price. UA can't float on just their name and reputation forever... 3. Upgrade and innovate their software/plugin offerings to compete with the latest plugin innovations. We're at a saturation point on plugins of vintage units AND hardware clones of vintage units. Not to mention that the Apollo Console leaves much to be desired on functionality compared to other offerings. UA should come out with new and innovative plugins as well as a new version of Console for the Apollo that allows modern functionality and routing instead of all of the well known and discussed limitations.

Good point: I have read that the current update makes Console multi-touch ?

I'm with you Quint on the conversation. They should play up their heritage with the conversion. Maybe something with the option of transformers in the path.

That's what I'm talking' about, either offer an Apollo converter upgrade, or update the 2192 to take the next step forward past Burl. Burl's design was an improved 2192 if I'm not mistaken.

Cost and needed processing power keeps me from buying and using as much UAD as I'd like to. At home I mixed on an Apollo Twin and it doesn't take long before I've used up the juice, and I'm not sure I want to invest in a satellite, don't need more inputs/outputs, and don't think a Quad would be enough to do everything I want to do. Also $149 to update my SSL is pretty steep.

A satellite doesn't give you more I/O ,just sharc chips for more dps and only for mixing.
keep an eye out though as UA is selling cards new at a discount people are selling octos for $750 used.
Lets keep in mind that burl sells 2 channel of DA and AD separately at list over $3000 each. UA has been updating its converters Sf to BF and they must have a new Apollo on the boards as they need to completely redesign it to increase its internal dsp to have more than 4 sharc chips for on board dsp.

I thought they made a post a few months ago about how the physical size of the SHARC chips prevents them from having more than 4 inside an apollo chassis along with all of the analog audio circuitry. That's why you'll never see an octo apollo. I could be mistaken tho...

Post by kcatthedog on May 27, 2017 5:02:23 GMT -6
Its not actually the physical size which is the limitation the current Apollo design has maxed out its dsp capacity, so it needs a fundamental redesign to increase that.
the more recent sort of dual core sharc chips have the same foot print as the current sharc chip but UA hasn't said boo about using them
As some plugs use more and more dsp and only onboard sharc chips can run ua for trackgin, it seem that there will be an apollo octo or with at least twice as much dsp as the current 4 chips one but not until we seen the redesigned apollo
I guess mkiii ?

They better address the so-so conversion if they do a Mk III, otherwise Apollo users won't follow this time.

I said yes and asked if he would also make this a mod for mki owners. I'm gonna guess no... When he started putting XLR's on the back (how it was originally supposed to be) I asked if I could purchase the pc board from him and install xlr's myself - which I was happy to do. The only answer I got back was "there is nothing wrong with trs connectors". ...ok I'm about to be out of the Apollo market. I have the 16 SF, and have been totally happy with it. But... I have enough outboard with my setup where I can get the sounds I want without having to use any of their plugs going in. I do use them a ton on my mixes though, so I'll most likely wind up getting an octo satalite and sell my Apollo and get something with better conversion.
