Those of you that moved all of your gear to a new location yourself, did you have to travel with receipts or proof of ownership of your stuff? I'm worried that if you get pulled over, they could think you stole all of that fancy audio equipment....

Rental truck packed to the gills and VW Passat Wagon, only problem was a busted tail light and got a written warning .

Might I suggest Skype for your next meeting with L.A. people? lol That would be nice wouldn't it? Great for chatting with Gma..... That's not going to work for a lot of business folk in the entertainment biz though. I wouldn't worry about receipts. I'd be more worrying about it all getting jacked when you cross over the pass from PS into the LA basin.

I'm worried that if you get pulled over, they could think you stole all of that fancy audio equipment.... Most states and/or cities have Civil Forfeiture laws whereby police can seize your personal property if they suspect it was obtained illegally. They do not have to charge you with a crime, they do not have to get a warrant and it's next to impossible to get your property back. Usually it's cash they confiscate. However, police do need your permission to search your vehicle, and you absolutely have the right to not tell them anything...so if you do get stopped I'd would suggest, very kindly and respectfully, telling them no if they ask to inspect your vehicle, and tell nothing in regards to what you have. The chances of an officer randomly doing this are small. However you should be aware that some states will require you stop at weigh stations depending on how big your truck is. And I have no idea what that entails.

The guy who's going to get pulled over and should be is the guy with an exposed unsecured load ! I would be 100 times more worried about a U Haul and I do mean U Haul specifically breaking down on the freeway and having to load it all into another U Haul that's just as likely to break down on the side of the road! Been there done that way to many times l, I wouldn't trust a U Haul to cross the street!

Regular movers such as Allied or United turned out to be cheaper than renting a truck when we moved to Nashville from the SF Bay area.

Bob that hasn't been the case in years, plus if your not a full truck it can take forever. For the most Part the big moving companies are more and more there for the big corporate payed relocation Buisness. My neighbor was just quoted around $5000 for a 2 bedroom apt KC to Boston!

That sounds about right. My move from LA to Portland will be $4500-5000 when all is said and done. And it's about the same if I rent a truck myself or pay a moving company. The only silver longing is that it will tax deductible in my case since I'm relocating for a job

What to avoid?? I'd say all of So Cal, but I know that's not very helpful is it? What do you want to know? Can you narrow it down a bit. It's like saying I'm moving somewhere in CT, NY or NJ. What's a good neighborhood? "Theoretically" you want to be as close as possible to where you work. Except when you don't.

Hey folks, I'm currently in L.A. with the wife checking out spots and neighborhoods if anyone has any suggestions of good spots, or neighborhoods to avoid. Almost anywhere in the city you can go from a nice neighborhood to a crappy one, back to a nice one in just a few blocks. Try these though, Atwater Village - cool, trendy, expensive, close to everything North Hollywood - nice and crazy pockets scattered through out. I'm general stay closer to the 101 and it's nicer. The farther north you go the crappier it gets. Sherman oaks/Studio City/Taluca Lake -very nice, family friendly, the closer to Ventura blvd the more expensive it gets Burbank - pretty nice all around, lots of TV and movie studios, radio stations and post houses. Family friendly, good schools and kinda pricey. I would avoided Hollywood, West Hollywood/West LA or anywhere West of the 405 and south of the sepulveda pass because it's crazy expensive. There are cool pockets in Silver Lake and Echo Park - very hipster, can be expensive, crazy congested with people and cars. These neighborhoods used to be ghetto and scary to travel through, now they're hipster paradise If I can think of more I'll let you know.

Also, avoid Korea Town, unless you like bed bugs, rats and the worst Parking in the city.

What part of Oregon are you in? Portland Hey Terry, Can you recommend a decent rehearsal studio in Portland? I'm looking for a monthly lease, somewhere I can setup all my recording equipment as well as a place to jam. I'll moving up there mid June and its looking like I'll be on the edge of Beaverton/West Portland. I already called Bongo Fury which looks like it may fit the bill...but can you recommend anything/anywhere to look? Thanks in advance.

We checked out a couple spots in Van Nuys and studio city, as well as one spot right on the edge of Koreatown in Rampart Village, and also a couple spots in Bixby Knolls. My uncle and aunt live in Long Beach, and they are doing the hard sell on being close to them (and it is working lol) so we are hoping for something down here to get us a roof over our head and be in a neighborhood that my wife really likes. you know the adage, Happy Wife, Happy Life! More exploration tomorrow and wednesday, but the spots that we really liked and got responses to will be viewed tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Toadhouse in north portland is pretty cool. audiocinema and puddletown are close-in east side. audiocinema has the thickest walls of these places, so I would think it would be the best for tracking and minimizing other bands and their 500watt tube bass amps getting into your recordings. I almost went that route a few years back and decided to find a house with a basement instead.

We leased a place in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach CA today! Get ready to hear planes flying overhead in some of my recordings. Well, let's be honest. I don't release anything other than youtube videos lol. here, enjoy some youtube videos of my favorite band that I get to perform with weekly because I won't be playing with them much longer and it's making me sad lol

Always, always, always, the local 2-man team with a name like "2 big burly men moving company"/.
Always. They have a lot to lose if they fool things up. So they're more careful and easier to deal with
