So I have an opportunity coming up that may involve relocating to another state (Oregon to be specific). Given that I've never lived more than 20 miles from where I was born I have my work cut out for me.
I'm currently getting quotes from long distance moving companies to move my normal house wear, furniture etc. I'll be packing up some of my music gear and having them handle it. Some gear I'll pack up and move in my own car when I drive to my new home/state. But I'll still have at least a large room full of music and studio equipment that I just don't trust to regular movers. Including guitars, amps, speaker cabinets, monitors, preamps etc.
Any one have experience relocating a studio long distance? I'll have my rack gear in road cases but a lot of stuff will be difficult to safely pack up.
Also, anyone have experience with a good insurance company that cover this type of trip.
Thanks in advance.

When I moved from NM to OR about 10 years ago I had all my precious studio gear in a van that I drove. I don't trust others to handle my stuff with care.

When I relocated I rented a Penske box truck with a lift gate and drove it myself. I don't trust anyone else to do it.

What ever you do do not be tempted to rent from uhaul! The low ride means a floor that isn't flat makeing it impossible to get a tight pack and there service record is miserable! Professional mover is a contradiction!

Yeah I think I'm leaning towards renting a large box trailer and towing it with my truck. And I'll probably just pack up the small durable stuff, like cables, di boxes etc, and have the movers take that. Now I just need to buy more rack cases and a few trunk cases. Can anyone recommend a company for affordable road cases? I might go with something from Road Cases USA, I have a small rack from them and it's pretty well made and fairly cheap.

www.audiopile.net/mobile/home.asp These guys are the current fave for affordable cases, but give the guys at clairbros used sales a shout! Home Depot has the best prices on boxes ! If I were to use a mover for less fragile stuff I would look into PODS or something similar!

If you have a lot of original shipping boxes, have you thought about shipping them to yourself, or a friend that lives in the city you're moving to?

I grew up a block away from a major UPS and FedEx hub...and this couldn't be more true. Its even worse if you put a fragile sticker on your packages.

What part of Oregon are you in? Portland Nice, looks like we may be neighbors soon. If this move goes through (it's not 100% yet) I'll be in the Portland metro area too.

So after doing some research into the insurance that's offered by these moving companies, it turns out that your covered for $0.65/lbs per item.... so if they break your 10 lbs TV that cost $600 you get $6.50.
So yeah, looks like I'm going to be renting my own truck and driving it myself...I don't even trust these movers to handle my mic cables.

We are plotting a relocation to SW Florida from the NW Indiana area this year. I'll probably use PODs or something similar for the furniture and other house related things. I could stuff most of the gear into a POD with the possible exception of the acoustic panels of which there are quite a few. I do have the original boxes for a lot of the gear so that helps. I might just rent a van or small box truck though and drive it myself.

Nice, what part of LA are you guys moving too? So far it looks like Penske has the best deal for one-way rentals. At least that's what I've found.

Her gig is in a building right by the 7th St subway station in downtown LA, so somewhere where her commute time won't suck and I'll be kinda near the recording studios in North Hollywood. Hopefully along that Red Line subway line.

Nice, well I don't know how well you know the area but North Hollywood has become really trendy and cool the last few years, that would probably be a good place to start. There and anywhere down the 134 freeway, through Burbank. You'd both have easy access to downtown and the valley.

Figure an hour + to go 7-10 miles from downtown in any direction during most times during the day. Roughly a 1 hour trip from downtown to NoHo with traffic (pretty much anytime between 6A and 8P). Buying or renting? Housing is around $600k-1M for a modest house in a decent area these days..... Good luck. Glad I only have to visit now.... :-) :-)

So a full day of travel for a 1.5 hour meeting each day. I did roughly 55 miles each way, and one half of the trip was not during rush hour. No accidents or major traffic issues - just 10 mil people in cars. :-) Figure an hour + to go 7-10 miles from downtown in any direction during most times during the day. renting, of course. that Red Line takes 22 minutes to go from North Hollywood (start of the line) to her stop in downtown. Might I suggest Skype for your next meeting with L.A. people? lol I'll be trying to get her to watch this regularly: www.dot.ca.gov/video/index.html
