I'm thinking of adding an extra hardware compressor to my setup, for either kick or snare drum duties. I already have a 1176 (Warm Audio WA76) that I tend to use for kick drum. I would like to get something else for the snare, or switch the 76 to the snare and get something new for the kick.
How about a DBX 165A? Or DBX 160 VU?

I prefer 76 on snare over kick, and soft knee comp on kick.
But I think you should try the Warm just shells parallel bus, and adjust the kick send to that to taste.
That can work well.

Last mix I did I used the FMR audio PBC-6A on snare for a definite tone shaping effect.

Revive dbx 166 or Revive dbx 266.
Add Zulu PHAT and Punchy.
Thanks -L.

Always 1176 on snare. Sometimes on kick, but usually just push the kick into the bus compressor a little harder. Gets things pumping while it levels the kick out a bit.

I could get away with using the Softube Console 1 compressor on snare. But I agree that it would be best to get something else for kick and use the 1176 on snare.

I think I've tried everything on snare after giving up recording to tape. My all time favorite ended up being the SPL Dynamaxx. You can compress the hell out of a snare making it thick with a lot of whack and it still sounds like a drum.

Not gonna say favorite, but my distressors tend to live in those roles. The FCS comps with N/L mode make a pretty brutal kick sound, but it's usually somewhere else. Haven't spent enough time with my CAPI FC526's to say yet.

i'm partial to dbx on kick and 76 on snare. both doing very little and then do the group with the 1176 to taste.

As a general rule of thumb.
The standard on snare drum mics is an 1176, rev F. Although a Rev D is also acceptable. also FET designs from Daking are popular. but don't over use. setting the clock hands on an 1176 at 10 and 2 with the ratio at 4:1 works well. (oh, and nominal gain 0 calibrated to -18dbfs
The standard on a kick drum is a VCA. Some might put forward a 160a, Focusrite Red series, Focusrite blue series (only slightly different). Chameleon, Kush, Dangerous and RND also work great but again, just cut the very tops off those waves!

I use one of my 6 Aphex 651's on kick. .002% THD, DC to daylight bandwidth, zero degrees of phase shift, the widest range of control in the biz. I've yet to find a drummer with an even kick level.
I don't compress the snare drums here, those get a limiter rarely but usually it's done in mastering where I "whack-a-mole" to settle down the hard hits. I like natural sounding drums played by great players, squashing them makes them sound like a drum machine.

I guess favorite should equate to most often used, which would be 160XTs here on both. Hard knee, GR LEDs bouncing on the down beat and back beat, smacky smack smack.

I think a DBX 160x for kick might be just the ticket, and affordable!

Between the DBX and the 1176 I think you'd be set for any scenario. If you had two of each, you'd never have to be forced to choose.
I've been using the 560A lately for kick, and it's working very well. You can find them under $200 any day.

I had a couple 165As and a PBC-6A back in the day (@ 7 yrs ago), and I thought they had a similar sound and covered the same bases (kick, snare, bass, vox, etc.). If I were to do it again, I'd just get 2-3 PBC-6As, which would only take up 1RU compared of 4-6RUs for a similar number of 165As. Plus, you don't have to worry about making pigtails for the barrier strip connections, or tracking down those wonky stereo-link connectors.

API 527 lives on my kick. A little tricky to dial in at first but once there I can't live without it.

I'll never forget when Glynn Johns was asked what compressors he used on drums. His response was "Why the !@#$ would you EVER put a compressor on drums? That sounds like sh!t!"

I ceased using compressors when tracking drums some time ago. I'll use a waveform editor to tame any errant peaks and then may use some parallel compression when mixing depending on the style. However for some more processed drum dynamics Valley Gain Brains and Keepex gates are still hard to beat. Controlled punch!

Distressor for snare, and 160x for kick here. I could see adding a 160 for kick and moving the 1176 over to snare. But i usually barely hit em on the way in.

Yes, it really is. And if you own one, I hate you. Ok, not really... I lovingly hate you and am insanely jealous.
