Pricks. Still only 16GB RAM in the 15" rMBP. $2400. Huh? Man $5000 base model .... wow this is way over my head at this point let me come back to reality... Where did you see the MBP info ? My 2012 15" 9.1 with 750gb 8gb ram stock was around $24-$2500 ... kinda surprised the new aren't even more $ lol

As much as I hate to say this, I really might have to go PC next time. Yeah if the iMac pro starts base model at $5k I can't even imagine what the new Apple Mac Pro will cost... Base model $8k Ughhhh looks like a regular IMac is my option or an obsolete trash can that's is definitely End of Life and non upgradeable... Serious Question: Does one even need the New Mac Pro / iMac Pro for audio production/ engineering? Seems like since the release of the trash can the Pro Line has been more for Video work from what I have read..

This thing will please about 1/2 the Pro market, the rest of us live in a world where the computer is the center piece and needs a bunch of stuff plugged into it. An all in one is just to messy! Apple seams to have a very loud message for us GO PC ! It sucks but unless we get a great new PRO MINI it's time we understand, they jus aren't that into us! It sucks because without us Apple would never have survived the 90's but hey that was over a long long time ago, miss that 9700!

I reckon there will be more to come on the Macbook Pro side. Looking at what they have put into the iMac Pro. There is not room in a laptop for all the components and heat dissipation of course but it will be better. That said ... for a permanent studio workstation, mobility is something you will have to play off against pure specs. Be it Mac or PC.
I have a mid-2012 MBP with the max spec available then, and I am not considering moving to PC. I like that OSX just works. I generally renew my computer every 4 years and this one is going for 5 now and still wonderful. Never a problem, I never have to re-start it. Just sleep in 5 seconds and wake in 5 seconds. I never have to worry about viruses or blue screens of death, etc. I have upgraded to every OSX release once it got to the x.1 release (just so the initial bugs are gone). I always back up my system before I do but I have not had a single issue yet. That said I am working mostly with audio files and though I have the full NI Komplete, I don't use it much. I also have 2 x Apollo 8's so there is a lot of processing going on outside the MBP.
I also think that the hub of my studio needs to be a rock solid system. We happily pay $3000 for a single channel strip or a compressor(I recently forked out $3800 for a Chandler Zener Limiter) but complain when that same cost is required for the system that holds it all together? Especially now in this DAW and age (see what I did there? :-) )
How much time and energy do you want to spend playing IT support guy instead of making music?
(Just talking my personal experience here)

javamadI am right there with you 2012 MBP love it stable on Lion, have upgraded what I can. jcoutu1 always tells me let someone else take the brand new depreciation so maybe a refurb trash can would be a smart buy when the new ones drop... yes dongle hell but I am already dealing with that now with my MBP... Funny is as can be I use pt10 which is 32 bit and only can access 4gb ram and I'm chugging away baby ( fan is annoying ) but hey 🤷♂️🤠 I really have loved this MBP ❤️💚💛

I'm intrigued by all this. Just how backwards do Apple products have to become before people will walk away? They almost have a licence to print money. Same with some DAWs. Money pits. As an example this Lenovo laptop PC is nowhere near top spec, but has 16gb ram, and running an i5 processor. I paid about £300 ($400) for it. To get an all singing all dancing i7 would cost less than $1000. Never had issues with any PC - my old studio one running xp is still working fine after 10+ years! Get a PC, get Reaper and buy that Bricasti

Perhaps I am a Mac lover.....
I worked in the computer industry, as a hardware systems engineer... I am really really sick of fixing and troubleshooting computers and never want to do it again.
One of the great things I love about Apple....I buy older model macs, but refurb or new....I never buy the latest. I buy apple care, and I budget to replace mine and Jo's iMacs every three years.... I also sell the old iMacs after getting the replacements up and running.
I also run logic, Final Cut Pro x....so all my creative work is Apple. If I have a problem with any of it...I have support....onsite hardware support if I want it.
That's a big plus for me and Jo. I don't have to fix it....
My iPhone,iPad and Apple TV all talk and work together really well.
When I made the change from pic to Mac, it was actually cheaper back then as you really needed a special pic to do audio.
Nowadays, even the baby iMacs are fast enough for me...I do basically just 16 to 24 audio tracks and use very few plug ins.
My big 27 inch screen allows me to watch movies on the studio couch and do the video editing I do.
I am happy over the course of the three years to absorb whatever price difference exists.
So, whilst one of the up coming iMacs would be fun.... I don't really think a lot of us would need it.
Cheers
Wiz

I've been considering the PC jump too. I'm due to order a machine and this new rMBP isn't much of an upgrade over my current machine. Windows 10 seems to have fixed a lot of the issues that XP and 7 had. I work in IT and the Windows issues have been less and less recently. I'm no longer afraid of Windows for reliability issues.
For about that same $2400ish, I can get a fully spec'd smoking Dell. I7, 32GB RAM, 500GB SSD, 4K touchscreen.
My biggest concern all of my interfaces working with the Dell. How long of an adjustment period will it take to feel comfortable with Windows over Mac.
I think I'm going to wait until the winter to see if Apple finally releases an upgraded rMBP, which will probably end up being too rich for me in the end.

The only thing that sucks is that converters like UAD Apollo and Apogee Symphony went Thunderbolt full bore and aren't offering anything for PC users who are using great interfaces from RME etc. I'll be damned if I'm gonna go to all the hassle of going MAC/Thunderbolt and pay a fortune when my PC->Aurora 16->RME PCIE is way less expensive and runs like a charm.

No one saw the new i Mac announcements ? Yeah, I saw all of it. MacBook, MacBook Pros, and iMacs are all updated. I personally don't have a ton of faith in the fusion drive. We've had the fusion iMacs for a few years and I'm pushing my users to go full SSD at this point. Haven't had failure issues with the fusion, but I feel like they should be zippier. What else ya wanna know?

So wait did they already refresh the touch bar MacBook Pro ? How loud is an IMac tracking within 5 feet of it ? Can iMac be equipped wit non fusion drive? Are iMacs upgrade able or what you buy is what you get?

I use a 2014 (I think) rMBP.

We bought a late 2013 27" iMac last year for around $2300 USD. It was fully loaded except for a Retina screen. 3.5ghz i7, 32 gigs RAM, fusion drive, 4 gig video, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt etc. Plenty fast enough for us but we don't run 100's of tracks with virtual instruments.
