er...to be murdered with one bolder...
Was thinking today I might buy the Sknote Sta-Limit plug...then record a vocal through the Stam 1073 and use both to compress at a few different settings. Also might demo the Acustica Pink compressor...not sure if my UAD API2500 demo is kaput or not.

I've been curious about that one. Are you saying you have the hardware to compare it with? And in that case, Retro or Gates?
Looking forward to hearing what you think of it.

Not sure... littlesicily mentioned it when he was buying the Dolby plug (that sounds really good in the examples)...I had the beta at one time and it was kind of a mess. Looks really nice now. Looks like he took some cues from Klanghelm.

From my limited knowledge it's an old trick done with a Dolby noise reduction unit not sure of the correct model number . Gives the vocal some Air . Also the Standard Audio Stretch 500 series unit is based on this also. Google " Dolby vocal trick" theres a ton of info on it . I have the U-he Satin tape plug in and it has this as a preset ,but I'm agree with littlesicily a little is all you need

It's the A-Unit, modded. It's a 4 band compander so you'd cut two of the bands so the top two would come through companded for some extra sheen.

Widely used back in the day in LA studios. I picked up a pair about 7 years ago on ebay for dirt cheap after I was assisting for somebody that used them for bgv's. They get used a bunch. Very cool sound and quickly fits things in somehow.

Let me know what you think of the Sknote plugin! I am currently reviewing a 176 styled plugin from another company, and it seems to be lacking in the saturation department. I would love a really kick ass vari-mu plugin of that variety that isn't your typical Fairchild or Manley emulation.

Try the Standard Audio Stretch Dolby trick and more in one 500 slot and pretty reasonably priced! Give these guys credit for not building another Neve Clone!

I bought the SKnote Sta-Level plug last year with a few other of those fine Italian delicacies and like the flavors that they all impart on my audio palatte. Find the sweet spot and enjoy.

Man... as decent as the plugs sound, the hardware just sounds so smooth and effortless. Like it's not even trying. That's my favorite thing about the real STA level. Plugs sound respectful and useable... but they sound slightly closed in comparison. And they don't handle the sibilance nearly as gracefully as the hardware. Your vocal sounds awesome as always Johnkenn - That Stam 1073 sounds real nice on your voice. Was this your upton mic?

Yes...the mic certainly has a ton to do with the sound here (check what I said in the Stam thread)...
