I don't know why everyone is freaking out. Is an amplifier and amplifier if it's not amplifying? Yes, especially if it's a 'color' amp, as this is.

Man, I'm looking at 4 mics I am willing to part with in order to get it. Unfortunately it only gets me about half way there. Good start anyhow. I know this feeling well

I was in L.A a few weeks ago so I took the opportunity to swing by Vintage King and demo the REDD mic ... (I don't normally get the chance in Dublin, Ireland) and wow it is incredible. I went around all the mics in the demo room and the Chandler stood out head and shoulders on my voice (singing and spoken) so I guess I have a winner. All I have to do now is come up with the $4k :-)

If it is anywhere within reach, it is absolutely worth selling other gear to swing this, it's amazing.

I am beginning to like the Chandler much better on vox when "bypassing" the internal pre (+4) & going into my AD2022 preamp. It sounds less colored and brings out a nice natural tone.

I haven't tried it with a different preamp yet, but it make sense. If you like what a different preamp does, than by all means, use it.

The preamp is always present, no bypass, only turning down the level, essentially you’re still blending. Hope that helps. Just blending more or less. The mic is the pre, the pre is the mic. Sorry, running on fumes...since the new TG 500 module launch.

Wow - this mic is killer! I just recorded my sax on it - and the Chandler handled a bright modern tenor sax like a champ. Here's some samples. This is raw and flat - completely unprocessed. Normally an unprocessed sax would tear my head off - but even with a brighter horn and setup, the Chandler sounds so sweet. Second clip is the same recording with a bit of reverb. Recorded in normal mode. soundcloud.com/user-934989569/sets/darren-rahn-tenor-sax-on-chandler-redd-microphone NoFilterChuck you hear?

It sounds good tho. But sax is loud, and not as "testing" of a mic as a vocalist is.

I gotta get you to play on something..... Very sweet. The REDD is definitely on my horizon somewhere.... I swore off mics for the last couple years, but this one is calling.....

Don't you guys find it odd that everyone is like "can't wait to use this as a mono drum room mic!!" ? Seems kinda insulting, no? Why isn't anyone declaring it their primary vocal mic? Are u47's and their ilk meant for drum/ambience duties more than vocal duties?

I can't speak for everyone, but the U47 mic type is a great mono drum mic in my experience.
I assume a lot of people chiming in here mainly are looking for the waifu vocal mic.

I'm like, "Damn, this MXL is the shit on mono drums."
And what's really the purpose of a mono drum mic? I almost always end up muting them.

I’ll definitely use it in mono drum. But not for ambiance. Most my productions are only 1 or 2 mics on drums. It would be the primary sound of the kit in my case. Also vocals for sure and bass & guitar cab I imagine would be glorious. Still looking around for shit to add to the for sale pile haha.

Hey drsax is that going through the built-in pre? Yeah Johnkenn - straight through the chandler mic w/built in pre into my Burl AD... no other gear or processing whatsoever. Running in normal mode without the lo contour

Are u47's and their ilk meant for drum/ambience duties more than vocal duties? Hah. Agreed NoFilterChuck - that's why I bought it. As a main vox mic, for my sax and as a killer all around workhorse. I've found that great vocal mics usually sound best on saxes too. Unless a sax player has a weak or overly harsh tone. Then it's usually time for ribbons.

Unless a sax player has a weak or overly harsh tone. Then it's usually time for ribbons. I'm curious, what mic were you using for your sax before you picked up the REDD? I have a pair of innertube audio mag mics with teflon AKG ck12 capsules and they are incredible sounding mics. On sax it's usually one of those through a BAE 1073 with a touch of EQ. Up to this point nothing has come close. They outperformed a well maintained vintage C12 at a reputable studio here. The engineer was floored. The mag mics aren't going anywhere but... the REDD is unbelievable and is the first mic I've had in here that will stay on the stand as much or more than the mag mics. It is insane.

The inner tube stuff is awesome. I sold Stayne some 414B-ULS's and he harvested the capsules out of that to make his mag mics. Makes one wonder why those caps get such disdain. I think it's the mic, not the caps. I also bought one of his Innertube Inserts for my vintage 87. AWE-SOME!!!
Yeah, I'll have to figure out a project where I need some sax!!
