Back to the REDD.... Here's the REDD Microphone on vocals—DECCA Artist Rhys Lewis 'Reason To Hate You'—minimal processing into a UAD 16; the complete article/interview on this recording is at this link: ->>> bit.ly/rhyslewisdrivesreddmichttps%3A//soundcloud.com/rhyslewismusic/reason-to-hate-youThat sounds fantastic.

Cool. Is there reverb on that or is that actually what that room sounds like? Very lively decay on the snare especially. It's just the REDD Microphone, no extra processing or efx.

It's a big untreated rectangle, very old brick building. Same room we did the 9 REDD.47 preamps sound samples in. Separately, and not heard in this sample, there were two REDD mics each on kick and snare.

Hey Spock, correct if I'm wrong but I had the impression that in GS you said there's a bit of compression and some pultec EQing going on for the exact same soundfile? It sounds great BTW

Adding another of the drum take, this time Kick, Snare and a little room; I've posted (here again) the room on its own for comparison.
The Kick and Snare each two REDD microphones as follows— Kick (in and out), Snare (top and bottom).

It's no SM57 but I think it will do the job... HAHA... I am really interested in that kick drum sound. Drummer is grooving pretty hard also must say.

Just finished my video of first draft demo tracks with the Chandler REDD on vocals and acoustic guitar. They're quite unfinished and plain, I'll add instrumentation a little later on down the road, but you'll get a good idea of what the REDD sounds like. I can only imagine how great this would be if I was in a great room instead of my living room! I spoke at length about it, so if you'd like to skip to the tracks, jump to 7:39.

Very nice review! Now I want one even more! Thanks a lot... lol. I’ll be sure to put in a good word about you and your review when I go to purchase this beast of a mic. Those tracks sound great done with that BF Apollo. I had a hard time reading some of the text on my phone in the video. Is that a standard BF Apollo or modded?

Thanks for the vid Martin. I think you owe yourself one of these mics. Sounds incredible on your voice.

Snowflake said, "I think you owe yourself one of these mics. Sounds incredible on your voice".
I had some big setbacks last year, so I'm grateful I had a chance to try it. It had that special quality that made me sing better. I've only ever had that happen twice, once with a vintage U67 and once with a Telefunken C12. As an artist, it's difficult to know there's a microphone that suits you so beautifully, but you can't afford it yet. Hopefully it'll find it's way to me eventually. The confidence it gave me was amazing. I sang more on pitch with it because it was clearer in my headphones.
I'd love to have it for my next album. I'll complete the tracks on the demo, so at least the Chandler will be on those tracks. I have high hopes for a Stam U67 to be a good fit for me.
Thanks guys.

Ha! Yes indeed, I plead guilty.
guitfiddler, that's the Blackface Apollo 8. It's been rock solid, no issues whatsoever. I've always wondered how much different the Apollo 16 sounds. I enjoy the workflow with Apollo's, but I like the sound of the Symphony Mk II bit more. But then again, guys who've compared them side by side say it's not that big a difference. I know Apollo's sound better when you use an external clock like the Black Lion, but that adds quite a bit to the price.

Martin, I am curious, what vocal mic will you be using when you have to send back the REDD?

The REDD was sent back a long time ago. I used the Soyuz 0-19 FET on most of my upcoming album. The Warm Audio WA47 just arrived, but I haven't tracked any vocals with it yet. I did manage to track some vocals for a friend though, and it was really good. He got two takes he'll use for his next album, so it's certainly a professional piece. I'll have to see how it fits my voice though. I'm expecting a Stam SA67 in a month or two. Since I do well with big sounding mics, I'm really hoping the Stam SA67 will be the right fit.
Here's a track that'll be released on Feb. 23rd. I used the lovely Soyuz 0-19 on it.

*that's M57 on piano and "accordion", henge on bass, and cowboycoalminer on pedal steel.
* Soundcloud tracks are always a bit crunchier than the actual recording.
That's M57 on piano, cowboycoalminer on pedal steel, and henge on bass.

Wow, that's a great collaboration! The Soyuz sounds good, too.
Question - not sure if it makes sense or not. But have you considered selling the Soyuz, Stam, and Warm and focusing all the cash in on one big REDD or something like that?

I haven't heard the Stam yet, but since I'm very compatible with U67's, and Stam will likely do a great job with theirs, I'm really looking forward to getting one when they're ready.

Adding a little more here... This is the REDD Microphone on both Billie Joe Armstrong, Miranda Lambert's vocals, and acoustic guitar, for this duet of Green Day's "Ordinary World". More details later; however, the mic was hitting an LA2A into the converters.

Okay, found the track posted as youtube vid. Again this REDD Mic on both Billie Joe Armstrong and Miranda Lambert's vocals and acoustic guitar. I believe the engineer said Miranda was 8" off the mic and Billie's take is 1', while the grr was 2' out. all hit an LA2A on the way in.
