Hey Don, that's great news! Congratulations my friend :-) This mic just keeps on giving. I tried the drive setting for the first time yesterday, and that was a completely different experience from the standard setting, giving me some seriously useful options. Typically, I'm not a fan of various settings on mics. The Bock I had, and the Lauten Audio Atlantis I tried had settings that to me were useless. I had the gain set too high for the Drive mode, but discovered you can get that old time distortion like a Moby vocal track if you want, only it's cleaner and more versatile. I'll try to use it again today at a better setting before sending it back. Unfortunately, the honeymoon's over, and I've got to let it go now :-( When I returned to the standard cardioid setting, it was clear how classically great the sound is, but the drive settings is so seductive, you may want to keep it there. What a great and useful thing Chandler included in what was already a stellar design. Cowboycoalminer said it "sounded like I was in the room" with him. It does, but not in the way some mics sound so real they have no charm left. The REDD has all the charm the classics have and more. The sound is both enhancing, big and intimate. The preamp in the mic is just brilliant once you get used to the effect it has. I'm really liking this mic with the samples you have provided, thank you! It has the look and it has the sound, and I like the idea that I wouldn't have to lug a preamp and extra cabling around to do demos. And the idea that those demos probably won't sound so demo-like. Can you speak a little regarding the noise floor? Especially when the drive is engaged, where is the noise floor hanging out compared to vocal peaks?.. My current setup I can drive a tube pre and get a really cool vintage distortion but noise is an issue. ---but the tone is so cool, it's a tough decision for me. Any info on that is appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Christopher. I know this can begin to sound surreal, but the REDD is also the quietest tube mic I've ever used. I hear zero extra noise, even when the Drive circuitry is engaged. perhaps it has something to do with the preamp being built in, or maybe that and some other factors, but don't let noise worry you for a second. I just tracked a BV's on three songs, and noise was never a thought. When it's not there, you forget to even think about it.

There are all kinds of varying noise floors in tube preamps, a zillion factors around varying circuit types and tube quality. There's a lot of 70's and 80's SS gear that's noisier than a lot of 1950's tube gear.

Noise has not been an issue at all

Yes, it's quiet. I tried the drive position last night just with phones, and it still isn't noticeablly distorted, just more of the vibe the mic seems to have. It just sounds good, you want to hear yourself through it.
I'll try to post another clip after next week, I'm jammed up in the mean time.

Well, I bought one. Based on the demo Martin posted. I've heard Martin's voice through several various mics over the years and the Chandler I thought was outstanding. I don't own any of the coveted vintage LDC vocal microphones and probably won't at this point. Yes it was expensive, I figure if I want to re-sell the REDD it would hold its value due to the unanimous reviews. Got it today. Put it up and recorded Allen Lanier's "In Thee" live, voice and Gibson B-25 acoustic guitar. Mic slightly higher than mouth high. Sang about 6" away, slightly off axis, no pop filter. Guitar was totally off axis, under the mic and about a foot+ from it. The mic sounds good in the phones when you get anywhere near it. Standard setting (not drive) cardioid, line level into MH ULN-8 with about 3dB MH Channelstrip comp at 2:1 ratio on peaks. In DP, it's bare except for Slate Trident on channel and mixbus, a little bit of Slate 480 plate and Pro-L limiter and dither. Geez, this is easily the best mic I own. It sounds like what you put in front of it, and gives it to you in a polished package. I'm keeping it. soundcloud.com/buck_dharma/chandler-redd-inthee Really does sound nice, Don. Just so real and natural but with this really forgiving kind of smooth, velvet quality to it. The esses are particularly nice. Great size and body too. Damn.

That sounds totally pro Don. There isn't one single thing you can fault about the sound you're getting with the mic.

Is having a good sounding room a prerequisite for this mic? I understand that this mic likes a little distance, and that will inevitably lead to more room bleed in the signal. My room isn't the greatest, but I've compensated by making it fairly dead and use an M7 for room sound.

Indiehouse, don't confuse sounding good at a distance as the mic needing distance for some reason. Yes, the REDD sounds unusually good at a distance, better than anything I've used in fact, but it sounds just as good when closer in.

The distance thing is probably about the amount of gain that can be applied, so if you have a closer source and don't crank the gain, you won't have room noise issues. If your room is quiet enough to crank the gain on a small sound, it can sound really large and also quiet. Very quiet tube mic. If your room is fairly dead and non-reflective back to the source, I would think you'll be good to go. Although the room you record in, decides what you can and cannot pull off.

I liked using it at about 2 ft. That's kind of my standard distance for most mics. More than that gave me a lot of room sound. My room isn't horrible, but it isn't great either. Then again, I'm very loud.

Even at 2-3' away or more, the source will sound like it's in your face, this is big part of the unique characteristic the REDD Microphone brings to the table. When we speak about distance, we mean its not a mic you have to eat or be on top of; something those who've worked with the REDD mic appreciate; the bass response stays fairly consistent even at distances, maybe about 10'. Martin John Butler is a great example of the REDD mic in an less than ideal space, listen to his clips. P.S. there's a incredible artist on DECCA releasing single on the 17th, that is REDD Mic on male vocals, accompanied with electric guitar; I will share once it's out.

Hey Adam, I'm loving my Chandler mic & was wondering if it was possible for you to talk about the capsule (type-style, material, manufacturer, etc.)? Ariel

aremos We're sooo happy you are digging your mic! Personally, I feel Wade's outdone himself, his design is something special and it's awesome to hear from users enjoying it. The cap is custom/handmade in Europe to Wade's specs, it platinum deposited rather than gold sputtered. On the whole, the combination or sum of the components and design together is the 5th player, so to speak.

Any truth to the rumor I'm just starting that there will be a 50% discount for in-person sales to RGO members at the year's winter NAMM?
