I just re-ribboned some Apex 205 and the difference was dramatic. Much more so than a transformer swap, which is a more commonly mentioned mod. Very finnicky work though, not for the faint of heart. I had an Apex 205 that I was pretty happy with. Then a not-at-all-careful drummer whacked it with a stand as we were tearing down after recording. I was pretty unhappy when I stumbled upon that. Then I got it re-ribboned. That drummer basically gave me a gift I had to pay $50 to get. That mic sounds SO MUCH BETTER now. I love it as a middle overhead or close room mic. It's also killer in front of guitar amps and I love it on the right acoustic guitars. I don't own a stereo mic but, like others, I have a stereo pair of Fatheads. A little dark sometimes. A pre with a few db of high end EQ does a fine-enough job dealing with that. It's normally pretty obvious when that mic isn't right. I like tools like that.
