I have always dug the Great River stuff...two more channels coming soon! Yeah, I could stand about 6 more channels of it myself I really like these CM100s. I just flipped a pair of Beyer MC930s and I like these better. I especially like both omni caps.

Do you have an API'ish micpre, ragan?' The Neve'ish recordings with these mics sound very good. Would be great to hear these mics thru the most popular other flavour, the forward mids etc.. Just curious. Thank you for providing these clips you already made! No need for scientific shootouts (is there anything like this really? It's always a "near scientific" approximation for things like acoustic guitar, you can't play the same thing twice nor record the same take from the same position...), i guess one can at least hear the potential of the mics thru a known good specified pre and your description. Very appreciated. Especially because the mics are very affordable...

Did a quick OH comparison of all the capsules. Not the same take, of course, but you can hear the range of sonics.

Can't wait to get home to listen to your examples. I just was able to score a thrice used Beyer m930 for 180 bucks. I have never used one before and am finally looking for a pair of smalls for micing up my acoustic string instruments. I have an ancient Audio Technica 4051b that would be fairly impossible to mate with another so will probably turn it to get a partner for the Beyer, or, if these 3U sound right might wait a bit longer down the line until the transformer version rears it's tiny wired head and finally is made available. Thanks for the post!

While no clone/"inspired by" mics can really be considered as a direct replacement for the real thing, the KM84 seems like the least-copied of the classic mics. Really psyched to check those out when available.

Really psyched to check those out when available. They're available. I've got a pair. They're smoother up top than KM184s, FWIW. Edit: oh you said KM84 so you probably mean the transformer coupled version. Yeah couple months away on those I think.

How does the Omni have more bottom end (at least that's what it sounds like in my car). Thought it would be opposite.

How does the Omni have more bottom end (at least that's what it sounds like in my car). Thought it would be opposite. It's got way more low end. Probably because the drums are in a corner? Totally deadened with bass trapping and broadband absorption but still a tiny room. The card and HyperCard have way more focus and detail but the Omni and Omni flat get the kinda whole kit bloom.

The omni would be pretty great in a limited mic setup...Can you do an acoustic with the cardioid?

Guess I'll take a deep breath, exhale and chill until that time comes when they are made finally available for purchase. edit:After listening to the Soundcloud files I found that I really dug the card on overheads and that they appealed to me more so than the 3U 67 doing the same duty. These seem to be killer little mics. Still, I wish to hear them up against their transformer bretheren when they are born into existence before I snag some for myself.

I too am waiting for the transformer version. I wonder what it would take to put a transformer into the mic as it is now. Im guessing youd have to change a bunch of components. I'll just wait.

Sounds really good. I am glad a company like 3U is getting some hype at a lower price point. In a way, it did remind me of a KM184, which is neat. I think 3U has their own sound going on, though.

Yeah, as is probably painfully obvious, I'm a huge fan. And you're right, Guosheng doesn't ever try to do straight up clones. It's always his take on a given circuit/sound.

Those clips all sound really great. I've been a user of the Beyer930's for several years now, but these are just incredible. I especially like the standard omni. For the price I'm keeping my Beyer's and picking up a pair of these!

Finally got a chance to try the CM100s on OH with the cardioid capsules. Wow, they are definitely my new favorite OH mic. Here's what I'm hearing:
Using the CM100 (card) on OHs the cymbals sound very natural and detailed with depth and no weird overtones like some other mics I've used on OHs. The snare sounds snappy with lots of detail again. The toms sound round, natural and punchy and the kick is tight and punchy. Th hit hat is super tight with no mush and no clang (yea, i hate clang on hi hats). I've tried lots of other OH mics and these sound the way I usually would try and make the OHs sound AFTER EQ but without needing any EQ. They do everything they are supposed to do without adding any low mid mud or low end boom. This is not an easy task and they do it well. When you add your close mics in the mix with the all the proximity that they bring to the picture you suddenly realize that all your drum mics are working much better as a team and life is good. It's not just that the CM100s do a good job at their price point, it's that they sound nearly perfect for what I want for OHs at any price point. i will say that if your drums sound thin to begin with and your aren't using any close mics you may not be that excited but my Phattie Drums (yes that's the brand) have thin shells with plenty of bottom end and in this situation the CM100s are terrific.
Also, try the CM100 hyper capsule on hi hat and you will hear exactly what your hi hat sounds like from the drummers perspective. It's super natural, not bright and the snare rejection is really fantastic. i've been searching for a hit hat mic that sounds this natural with this much snare rejection for years. BTW, I'm also a drummer.
My assistant engineer is hearing basically what I'm hearing with these (he probably is gonna get a pair) and another producer who works at my studio loves them too to most of the same reasons and is interested in a pair. Also, several of my audio technology students are excited to get a pair as they start their mic collection. Just saying. :-)
Unfortunately now I realized that I'm gonna need more than 2 of these mics. I can't wait to hear the transformer versions. :-)

These mics look pretty iconic. I'm holding out for the transformer pair, but here's the pricing list- copied over from the purple site: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The CM100 series SDC mics will be available next month. They have low cut and pad switches. The CM100 is a little warmer than GZ74. The CM100-C is a little more airy than GZ74 cardioid. The CM100-O-Flat has flatter top end than CM100-O. I hope it works well on pipe organ, and grand piano. Below are SDC mic and selectable capsule (ship with mic together) price with free express shipping arriving in one week in normal conditions. CM100-C US$179 CM100-H US$189 CM100-O US$189 CM100-O-Flat US$199 Cardioid capsule US$80 Hypercardioid capsule US$90 Omni capsule US$90 Omni-Flat capsule US$100 Little bit confused which one is close to a KM 184? Do they sell matched pairs as well? Cheers Holmes....

He does sell matched pairs. I've got matched pairs of CM100s, Warbler MKIDs and GZ67Fets.

Stupid me yeah C = Cardioid HC= Hyper Cardioid O=Omni Directional I was just no thinking LOL. If I remember right you can buy the same patterns for the KM 184 body by Neumann? Would be keen to hear steel-string acoustic guitar without any treatment. Just mic and preamp no EQ no nothing... You drum example was compressed a little bit? The Snare did sound like this a little bit.

I noticed the snare too. Did you muffle it? Sounds really classic. Yeah I pretty much always dampen the hell out of my drums. Usually a wallet taped to the snare but I think those clips it was just gaff tape. You can see it in the pic on SoundCloud.
