Would love to hear some more recommendations. I prefer speakers for my own performance but it's sometimes just not acceptable (particularly with a metronome track on a vocal/acoustic song). I have the DT880s which create the same problem as a speaker. And, some closed AT's which still leak too much. I'd actually like to find something with just one ear. I know I've seen them before (maybe in aviation). Is there anything like that with decent enough sound for tracking? Welcome to our part of the Internet! All of the single ears I have seen are either industrial or DJ, it's such a small market that I think using regular phones single ear is going to give you a much better chance of finding something you like. In my younger years I preferred closed, now my favorites being Grado & Stax electrostatics I find I prefer open !

I'd love to try singing with speakers one day, but it's impractical in my little apartment. I've alwways enjoyed closed back cans, I feel like I'm in the record. But, i am off pitch too frequently, so it makes me wonder if the cans are one of the causes of that.

longscale, I have not tried this yet. I'm in no rush. I don't want to break my headphones. that said, the info in this guy's review is valuable. its all about not breaking the plastic. and getting to the metal bands. be aware that this looks a little tricky. you might be better off, not trying to do this if you think its too risky, and you'll break them. all of that said, read the first review. click on show more. he's got pictures and everything. I'll report back tomorrow with the size of the tiny torx. and welcome to the forum. lots of really nice, cool people here. www.head-fi.org/products/focal-spirit-professional

Thanks for the technical tip. I know that my performance will be stronger sans cans.

I lacked the stones to try to disassemble my Focal's. I opted for a less invasive approach. I found that a 5lb Reebok hand weight was just about perfect to set the Focal's on and gently stretch them out a bit. I left them on the the weight for about two weeks. This seems to have done the trick to ease up on the tension. I'll probably put them back on the weight for another week or two to see if they ease up further. I'm happier with them now wrt physical comfort.
It goes without saying that if you have Focal Spirit Pro's and attempt to stretch them out - do so very carefully. Many people have reported cracking in these joints and the plastic involved with these stress points seems to be somewhat suspect. I've not had cracking with mine - but as always YMMV. Some early versions of these headphones seem to be especially prone to cracking.
