I have a ton of tripod mic stands, but I'm looking to pick up a nice heavy duty mic stand for vocals. I've heard good things about the atlas ms25... any opinions on that one, or others? I probably don't want to spend more than $200, so that eliminates latch lake.

Man, these stands are beasts! Best stands I have ever used, hands down. I have a closet full of K&M (the boom arms constantly droop on me). I hate spending that much dough on something that doesn't make a sound, but I'll tell you, I'm really glad I did. I'm not a fan of financing gear purchases, but at $17 a month (36 month deal), I don't even think about it.

I have two of those. You can troll eBay for a bit and find them pretty cheap from time to time.

It hurt to spend rediculous money for latch lake, but a while back I purchased a 2200 & 1100. They are incredible and will outlive me. Now I no longer think about mic stands. No buyers remorse and I no longer worry about leaving an expensive mic set up.

Both K&M and Ultimate Support make some dandy stands.

The Atlas is one of the old golden standards, hard to beat but not cheap. The air suspension is nice extra protection that I'm not aware of in any other stand. There are so many Atlas out there, used should show up pretty regularly.
I like retired Volkswagen Bug flywheels for additional mic stand weight. They fit perfectly on most round base stands.

Thanks everyone for the feedback --- great info. Has anyone tried the Triad-Orbit stands? Looks like a well thought out system, and a fair bit cheaper than latch lake with the bonus of 360 degree movement, as well as adjustable leg height/angle.

Triad Orbit is amazing. I bought a bunch and replaced my K&Ms, the Triad Orbits are so much better, it's not even funny. Highly recommended, even though they are expensive. But worth every penny.

Yeah, I picked one up from sweetwater on sale then found a few on the local CL for pretty cheap.

I replaced my MS 25 and BS36s with Triad Orbit. I think they are the biggest advance in recording that I can think of in a decade!

I've had good luck with DR Pro stands I've left mics up for days on them with no drooping.

Heres my heavy duty mic stand . Patent pending😄 Ha ! And I'm not actually done with my custom heavy duty mic stand . I have some twine that is going to tie to the boom arm and then to the concrete block so the boom arm won't sag down from the weight of the mic . After I get my patent for "Scumbum's Heavy Duty Deluxe Mic Stand accessories" I can sell the concrete block and twine for $99 at sweetwater . That will be a $97 profit !!! Well this is the audio industry ....I better charge $200 .

There's a surprising amount of grip equipment originally intended for lighting instruments in photography, video and film production that can translate really well and much more cost effectively to the audio world. Typically they're really well balanced and designed to hold a lot of weight. Do an ebay search for something like Matthews or Avenger boom light stands. It'll probably require buying some adapters to get you to the standard 5/8" thread for microphones but those are pretty easy and cheap to find. Here's an ebay listing for one that has me somewhat intrigued for the 4038s I picked up recently. I like the option of using a sandbag counterweight. www.ebay.com/itm/Flashpoint-Pro-Air-Cushioned-Heavy-Duty-Boom-Light-Stand-13-FP-SB-13-/331919475791?hash=item4d47f1444f:g:2jwAAOSwImRYI47J

I'm not looking at accessories like mic stands right now, I'm trying to swing a new Apollo and a new computer before the NewYear, arrgghh.. * good suggestion Jayson.
