Like everyone else, the only thing that really gets my cpu up is reverb (Eventide TVerb and Waves IR, Phoenix is pretty good) and most of the emulation Waves plugs.
Just updated PT to 12.6 and it looks like they fixed the cpu bug in the system. Daw Cpu meter would show crazy spikes and crash the system under lower buffer setting even though the daw was only using 15% of the cpu.
Ran a 40 track session at 88.2 and was perfectly stable. Now that's on a 2012 mac mini 2.6 quad i7 with 16gigs of ram.

Ok the i7 4790K is a lot newer, and you are right, the first time(s) I've maxed it out are with massive VI counts and somewhat higher sample rates, low buffers, oversampling plugins, etc.
I have not yet used it for a standard high count audio track mixdown session. Still pretty new to it, but there's also no turning back to the old way. The Phenom machine was choking too often, which was the whole reason for the upgrade. It's also nice to have a "B" machine for mobile, which is what I'm doing this month.
