I reached out to Chance, he still has some ribbons left he is selling off for 75, LDC's for 75 and a double ribbon for 125. He's double checking on any 73's but he doesn't think there are any left. Too bad. I'm interested in getting a few ribbons, but I feel that there is a real difference in quality with ribbons at low prices vs high prices. Am I wrong? He had comparison videos i'll be checking out soon. Id grab another 73 to play with if he has some. Maybe we can do a group buy? Lol. I kid I kid (probably in poor taste but whats a world without irony to remind us how goofy we all are) In all seriousness im curious on what the ribbons are like? Im on the lookout for a royer (or cheaper alternative if anybody knows of one)

Darn, I missed it. I wanted to make a pair. I really like the MXL ribbons! Don't feel bad. I researched the mic on the web. The insides are built on a P.S.B. The ribbon is off center. You had to modify or rebuild the P.S.B., Replace the ribbon and transformer to make it sound any good. I passed.

I just pulled the foam out of the headbasket and tensioned the ribbon. It's pretty dang good but I don't have any Coles or AEA here.

I haven't bought a ribbon since a guy stole my mic box out of my studio, reducing me to never wanting a partner in any studio project ever again.

Oh i hear you. Had my beloved at-4047 and 4050 stolen and fuck that hurt. Along witb my rosetta. The bastards. I cant buy mxl. I dont need any cheap stuff anymore and ive never used any of their mics that i didnt think was just a sad excuse for a mic. Imo even Behringer (patooee) makes better mics.

I have a serious addiction and am always buying stuff... so I don't even know how to catch up on this thread. One strange thing though that I'll bet Randge can identify with. A guy asked me to 'sell' him something just the other day. What does he mean by 'sell' him something? Like, get rid of gear for money??? Insanity.

I dunno. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on either a pair of preamps, or a preamp and EQ.. Or maybe a pair of EQs.. Even if they aren't perfect clones, they gotta be useful, especially for the price..

Not exactly, OEMs will often use some higher grade components on stuff they build for others and use the cheapest of the cheapest for their own labeled stuff.

I wonder what it would cost to get a couple custom faceplates for these Alctron EQ's. They might literally be the ugliest piece of gear I've ever laid eyes on.

Note about the EQ...
EQ73a: The EQ73a is an excellent complement to the MP73a preamp. It's class-A circuit design is modeled after the legendary 1073 EQ module. The high an mid frequency bands have more options than the original. The all-discrete circuitry used in the signal path give the EQ73A a warm, punchy, sweet and musical sound. The EQ73A works in conjunction with the MP73a or other preamp with a mini insert connection, (Golden Age) and cannot function on its own. Mini insert cable is included.

I have the gap pre73 with the eq73. I replaced the transformers with carnhills and put in a NOS transistor. I think it sounds amazing. Reviews of the mod have agreed with me. It does lessen the wooliness when pushing it that would happen with the stock transformers.
The EQ won't have any transformers, but you should be able to replace the output transformer on the alctron 73, as it's all the same thing as gap's (from what I can gather), just god awful uglier.

You have the half rack versions though, not 500 series? Are they the same circuit/parts?
