I feel like the 3U works best with your voice. The FG12 still seems to have too much push and the 47 seems to pull out too much push. Yeah, I absolutely prefer the 3U, both because I think the VMS emulations are just a little flat compared to real mics and because its voicing is a better match for me. The GZ67Fet is probably the best match I've found for my voice out of probably 2 dozen mics I've had through here in the last few years. The clip I posted is no EQ (except some HPF). I know I'm a broken record about it, but 3U is excellent stuff. You ever try the Tube version of the 3U67?

Dennis and I and some others jumped on the Warbler mics just based on how impressive the circuits looked (Guosheng shows his confidence by just coming right out and posting hi res pics of the guts and capsules when he comes out with a new mic ) and the fact that they were custom, non OEM capsules. Then we started posting clips and people starting buying them and posting more clips and that whole thread went nuts on GS. My only point being, with a ton of clips and very low prices, the FET mics have flown off the shelves. With hardly any clips of the tube mics and their inherent higher price, they've remained more of a mystery. I've always been curious though. I think his tube mic packages are around $1k-1200 or so. I have no doubt they're nice but yeah, zero experience with them.

Here's another quick comparison I did.
This is the 3U Audio Warbler MKID/Great River MP-2NV combo compared to the FG-67/FG-73 and FG-12/FG-73 combos.
So in each clip, the 12 string and the 6 string were tracked with the mic in question.
Each track got a little Great River Harrison 32c HPF and a little Hairball Rev A 1176.

ragan have you compared the 3u gz67fet to a Miktek c7 or c1? I have used the miktek c7 with great results and that mic IMO would match well with your voice. Not to mention you have a great Heritage pre which is probably more vibe/ color than the RND 511, which we normally paired with the miktek.. The c1 is the cheaper little brother from what I can gather. I am very impressed with the sound of the gz67fet clips thru the heritage pre. I am about to compare the newest files you posted. Thanks again

Somehow the acoustic guitar tracks were more obvious to me than the vocals, but I pretty firmly prefer the 3U MKID in this example.

In isolation i think I'd be happy with the VMS67 - but the warbler pips it pretty comfortably. Didn't rate the VMSFG12 for this application.

That's how I feel about the whole Virtual Microphone System. In isolation the emulations sound really good, but when compared to a comparable microphone, you can hear the difference.

I mean granted if it were sold in a typical retail scenario it would be 2 or 3 times that but still.

Yes and keep in mind, that Warbler is a $349 mic. I went to the 3u website but still seek more info in the difference between warblers and gz67fet besides price. I realize the warblers are what made 3u so popular, especially the 87 clone ( please let me know the actual model ) Do you have a go to mic or is that why you are demoing VMS and other Mics? I liked the 3u audio clips again, however next time I will get someone to play he files for me so I can choose blind

I liked the 3u audio clips again, however next time I will get someone to play he files for me so I can choose blind Yeah the website is not smooth and pro at all I've thought about offering to help write some better copy for it, but I guess I find it part of the charm. 3U is a totally unique situation in the mic manufacturing world. You're buying from the guy who owns the small factory and who designs the mics himself. What you lose in a slick browsing experience you make up for in crazy bang for the buck (in my opinion). I've always just emailed him to buy mics. He's a really nice guy. So the Warblers are either just the number (MKI for example) which means cardioid only or the "D" variant (which means dual capsule, mulitpattern, MKID for example.) It basically developed that way because he originally just came out with "The Warbler" which was the fixed cardioid U87 style mic. Then he came out with a 47 style mic and called it the Warbler "MKII", which made us all start calling the original Warbler the "MKI". Keep in mind they're all FET mics, the style just means the way the capsule is voiced and the circuit/transformer configuration. As far as the numbers and the mics' voicings, it's this: MKI - U87 MKII - U47 MKIII - C12 MKIV - 251 MKV - darker version of MKIV, pretty dark and vibey MKVI - Sony C800 style, brighter version of the MKI Keep in mind all the Warbler mics have 3 voicings. V1 being flat and then V2 and V3 rolling off top end successively. I like this a lot. I use my MKID's most often in V2 because it sounds the most like a vintage U87 to me. It's in V2 on that "Wish You Were Here" clip. If I'm gonna stick it in front of a brash amp or drum kit with overly bright cymbals, I'll stick it in V3. Works really well.

ragan thank you very much for doing this 3u write up for me! I screen shot the info and this will help me when I order. Have you used the MK1D simultaneously with a u87 vintage or Ai? If not can you elaborate further between the differences sound wise to you between the MK1D and 87? What makes the gz67fet more expensive than the $350 warblers series? Better capsule, different electronics? How does the gz 67fet compare to the MK1D? Are there other gz fet Mics like a "gz251fet "? Thanks and sorry to bombard you with so many questions

jcoutu1 what makes the gz models cost more? Have you used the warbler series at all? The GZ series have US made AMI transformers and some other more "premium" components. Go to my SoundCloud page and scroll down aways. There's a 70s U87 shot out with one of my Warbler MKIDs. Vocal, acoustic guitar and drum OH. I think the Warbler holds up well.

ragan thanks again man for all the info jcoutu1 haha that kind of reminds me when Johnkenn would get lots of new gear to only flip it 3 days later 😁 Then buy it back and flip it again 😂 I mean that in the kindest way possible! To stay on topic: The 3u/ heritage pre combo is doing something to the audio the vms is not doing. I think it's the preamp. I don't want to say the VMS pre sounds bad because it does not, however it seems flat and bright. Nothing wrong with flat frequency response based preamps, there are some great ones out there, however they are much much pricier like Gordon, Grace but the audio produced from these pres is still exciting and musical. Ragan's great performance and singing is not the issue at all because the the heritage 3u files sound lively, vibes, have depth and impact.. I hope to hear some audio recorded with the VMS that can show its vibe, depth, impact, etc. Waiting on another Vincent R. comparison vid

They're designed to just be a flat, known baseline from which the emus can start once you're in the DAW. I just dont think the emulations have the same life that real gear does. Which is exactly how I feel about other plugin emulations. They're very good and impressive and useful. But they're not the real thing. To my ear anyway.
