Sax (alto or tenor): C414. The new XLS is great in this application, but so is the B-ULS, the P48 and the EB. It's funny you say this. Every video i've posted where everyone likes my sound is where I used my 414B-ULS, NOT the MicRehab CV4. And people said we'd never get a long or make a happy couple... oh those doubting Thomas's!

Just did some of this last week.
My choices were
4038 on sax
RCA - 44 on trumpet
RCA - 77 on bone
I had planned on the bone being on the 44 but they walked in and started playing on those Mics before I could say anything and it sounded fantastic so I just let it be.
I've had great success with a 67 on sax too...
Also - I feel like the pickup pattern of rinbons is so damned useful when you have a sizeable group of musicians all playing at the same time in one room. I had the 3 pieces of brass, drums, upright, electric gtr, and b3 organ all going in 1 room, gtr amp and all, and the leakage into my ribbons was not only minimal, but the leakage I did have sounded great.

A long time ago I recorded my old friend Richard Hardy (played sax and some flute for Joni Mitchel) playing Tenor Sax with an original Rode Classic thru an old Joe Meek VC1 about 8 feet out in cardiod and angled down from 7 feet up 30° off axis. He said it was the best sound he ever got.

I've got a Mesanovic Active Ribbon here that I bet would sound fantastic on horns. Seems to have a little bigger bottom than a 121 and maybe a little darker

For comparison, here are 10 mics including dynamics, condensers, and ribbons on an alto sax.

I liked the TLM 170 and RCA the best...

I think my favorites were the MD-441, AEA R-88, and Coles 4038. The MD441 is a favorite of mine for this application so I was not too surprised. If I wanted a brighter tone I might pick the modified U87. Maybe it would be cool to set up a condenser and a dynamic in a coincident pair and combine them in the mixdown.
That was really educational thanks for sharing.
