IMO, nothing sounds like a 44/77. RCA's are - for some reason - incredibly unique beasts that have never quite been recaptured by clones or soundalikes. Now, "better"? Quite possibly. That's in the ear of the listener and completely subjective. But better isn't the same, and if you want the RCA vibe, you can't get it anywhere else IMO. The sound of an old RCA ribbon is still a viable highly regarded vibe. It's like stepping inside a time machine.... If your singer wants a crooner style vocal, put up an RCA and watch them go gaga and perform to their max. If you want a killer room tone for drums that stays smooth and that you can compress to $#@! and not get trashy, it's very hard to find something better. Horns? Instant 1950. Booker T's classic leslie swirl? 77's. These are classic era specific mics that at one point in time (not anymore) I didn't really think I needed in my mic closet. I was wrong. The AEA 44 models are pretty good and sound very, very close, but still..... All that said, I love ribbons and am happy that there's guys still developing them. I'll have to check these guys out. But at $1500, you're striking into RCA territory financially. (At least for 77's) I wish I bought more RCA's back in the day when they were not so expensive, (there was a point when scoring stages were literally tossing them in dumpsters) but still, in comparison to 47/67 and even 87's, they are still a bargain. Get em before they're gone. Luckily, there are a lot of them still out there....

We recently used his SR1A during a pre amp demo/video session at Mike Mogus's ARC studios, and all 6 engineers in the room agreed it sounded amazing. The word massive comes to mind. We had it just over and on top of the kick and it captured the entire kit beautifully. Matt played us some tracks while we were at his studio during the summer NAMM and the drum sound he pulled up was amazing, and he swore it was just two of his smaller SR2N's, I totally thought he was messing with me. Sounded like fat Rudy Van Gelder. Our partner in crime Joel has had an SR1A for a few months and it now rules over his Royer121 and AEA mics as biggest guitar sound ever.
I'm huge fan of ribbons and regularly use RCA ku2a's, Ku3a's, 44's, BK5's, Kb2a's, Shure 333's, Coles 4038's, beyer m160s. The Stagers can easily hold their own against any of these for sure, and definitely sound like serious real studio gear. Matt's a pretty serious dude, winding his own trannys, hand welding the metal grill cloth layers, making his own drivers and ribbons. The magnet in the SR1A is a big as your fist. Seems he's pretty passionate about what he's doing, and he's a real engineer, so he's got ears to boot.
Definitely the only new mics on my list to own. We immediately got three sets, one for each of us, with 2x SR2N's and 1x SR1A.

Mike's studio is very cool. He showed me around it one day. Some really great rooms in that place.

Matt and I played in a punk band together when we were teenagers, he got in touch with me about these when he was building prototypes just a year or so ago. I'm in line to demo the big 'un but I have a feeling that, based on what I've been hearing, it's not going to be sent back. I've pretty much been pushing back the date for him to send me one till we have the cash to buy it. The demos sound great, I've seen some shootouts online in the past day or so but haven't had time yet to listen to them. This is my first post here, and I'm adding nothing to the discussion but hey!

We got on board with Stager Ribbon Microphones as soon as we laid hands, and ears, on the SR-1A! Such a great ribbon mic....and we've heard many in almost 20 years in this industry. He has since come out with with its little brother the SR-2N. We received two of these from Matt to check out and we sold them damn quick! Not surprising for a hand built $500 ribbon that sounds as if it should be 4x that price!

Gotta say, these look mighty fine. Can't get 'em off my mind. Is there a lot of overlap between the two models?

The tone between the two is similar...but the bigger SR-1A just sounds, well, bigger in every way! the SR-2N is a great sounding ribbon, but if the budget is not an issue, the 1A is just killer!

Here are the ribbons I have: 1942 RCA 44, Samar Audio VL37 (2 of them), Royer R121, Fostex M88 printed ribbon, and even a CAD Trion ribbon
Can anyone here compare the Stager to one of those, please?

Well I have a 3 x week road trip coming up on the weekend so it wont ship out until near the end of Oct and then I imagine another 2-3 weeks before it arrives. I think maybe towards the end of November I should have had enough time to give an idea as to what it sounds like. I have a Grace 201 preamp that I am looking forward to pairing up with this Ribbon mic. The fun part is finding what Preamp does it justice. I have not bought a new mic for a while. So I imagine quite a few hours of fun will be in store for November/December.

Bump for user reports! I can get a pair of the smaller model for the cost of a single Coles. Very tempting!
