Or m269? tubedepot.com/products/ac701Bargain, no? Does anyone know if there's a way to modify them to use a more available tube to have the same airy top? I would imagine the clones are using something else, right?

There's something really special about the 701.... really really hard to get close to it.
But, I'm using a 5840 in my C28 design that I've heard a lot of folks have good results with. Fraction of the cost of a 701.

Way overpriced. Last time I checked on mine, the going rate was around $800-850US. LOTS of 701's still floating around. It's not like they are VF14M's.....

Yeah but it's not K version.. Even though the site says "they are all K", I always read that the K version was not a "special" design variant of of the 701, but a hand tested/selected and burned in for noise, where something like 50% or more were rejected and sent back..

I'm not buying that story about the K. You gotta run actual tests to verify K performance.

I'm not buying that story about the K. You gotta run actual tests to verify K performance. That's the thing your going to pay the price for somebody to measure and garrantee performance! K or not at this point you want to buy from somebody who is going to take care of any problems!
