Glad to see a small company like RTZ making fans. They are my sound for sure and I have very much enjoyed having 12 channels to track with.

Love the GR but Dan will be the first to say it's not meant to sound like a Neve, it's like comparing a brand spanking new 911 turbo to a an original 63 911 !

ahh. I see, thanks, I guess it'll be good to try though. At least I'll have that reference, and see how my mic fares with it.

Honestly, I'm sure I'll like the RTZ, from what you and Randy have said, but The Dan Alexanderis arewhat I wanted at the time and still do, an example of what a good old Neve sounds like! The RTZ from what both you and Randy have said sounds more like a modern take on Neve, a color I probably would love to add ! But you know what made made decide to keep and end up with 8 ch of Dan Alexander? I plugged a very Blah TLM103 in and it sounded big bold and warm ! I figure any pre that could do that was worth keeping ! The only secret sauce in a world of clones real old Neve transformers on the input and output ! Besides last time I was at your place listening to stuff you and Randy did I didn't have any pride left!

My friend just brought his Great River preamp over for me to try last night. It’s the 1/2 rack space Me-INV1 coupled with the other 1/2 rack space EQ-INV1. Together, they cost around $2,800.
I used a track where I previously did a vocal done with the Soyuz-017, and another vocal track done with the Blackspade UM-18R side by side.
So now I can compare the two tracks with the third vocal I did last night with the Great River and my UM-18R. We had the EQ in line, but kept it flat. It takes an experienced musician or engineer to really hear it, but I did a quick vocal with the UM-18R, and it finally just sat in the track properly, it was just more muscular than the Dizengoff D4, more solid, no mushy low end. When I get time, I’ll post files of both.
My Blackspade UM-18R with that preamp might sound better than the Soyuz 0-17 did with the D4. Sidebar, my friend preferred the UM-18R to the vocal I did with the Soyuz 0-17. Maybe it's because of the preamp itself, but maybe not. I wouldn't know unless I had the Soyuz and his Great River to compare.
If one of the Neve clones could be had for $500-$700, I might consider selling the D4. Of course, I’d just keep it if I could afford to, I like it on acoustics a lot, but if I can only afford one, the Neve style might be a better fit for my UM-18R.
*I recorded with only the preamp direct to my Apollo, no compression, this way I could hear the preamp. I don't love the 1176 compressor much for vocals anyway, I'd rather have an LA2A clone, or if cost was no object, the Sta or the Chandler.

Just my preference, but I prefer solid state amps (am I using SS right?) Tubes seem to add top end IMO. Even the V76 is somewhat of a bright pre (but gorgeous).

And I should say in combination with another tube compressor...Maybe slightly too much of a good thing. But alas, I am but a lowly end user and you can take that with a grain of salt.

littlesicily has a Neve LB for sale at a really great price. I really liked that pre...wish I still had it (but I'm saving for the Upton ) Anyway, I love having an XLR on the front...it was SO useful.

Thanks Jake, I'll snoop around a bit first, and probably buy one of the Neve style pres soon. The Great River's definitely up there as a possibility. I gotta take a little time anyway, I just bought sweet little Bad Cat amp, so my reserves are low... again.

I had the great river a few years back. Good pre and nice tone. Not so close to a Neve 1073 sound IMO but nice nonetheless.

Me no have no lunchbox, ugh.. You can score the 6 space Lindell box for about $200 and the 500 series Great River for about $600. That leaves you 4 open spots to grow into.

My 1073 is the 1073DMP by BAE.
I bought it for 800 AUD used.. about 600 USD atm... sure, it was a deal.. but keep your eyes out. Nearly every vocal you have heard from me, is that pre.
cheers

Since this thread is about Martin's songs- and the style he likes which includes sparse arrangements- I thought I'd add this vocal chain from what I've read about George Massenburg's recording Lyle Lovett on the Josua Judges Ruth album.. U67-> GML Pre-> GML 8900 compressor (where apparently GM compresses 20 dB or more during tracking. See posts 10 and 18Who tracks compressing 20dB? Yowza! Anyway, thought it was interesting, because from what I've heard of Martin's songs it seems this is the kind of vibe that would work. Correct me if I'm being presumptuous, or have mistaken what you're looking for Martin.

that is a near flawless production... its only personal preference.. but the sibilance on the voice is the only thing I don't really care for..
beautiful LCR mix

Just save your pennies and keep an eye out. They come up used all the time since they're so popular.
