Officially this will be announced on 1st of june. On FB they leaked already, what the announcement will be about. I am very curious how this deal will be priced. I think that they want to raise the volume of summer sales, but i wonder how this works on the long run. Is there pressure on Cakewalk by Fender/Tascam, who aquired Cakewalk a while ago? Has there been ANY deal like this in the idustry ever? Quite some interesting questions.....

I think it's interesting that software companies have followed the model developed by phone/utility companies.

As long as developers keep releasing "fully functional 14 day demos", you'll always have pirated software.

A desperate attempt to squeeze the last few drops of milk before they let it languish into obscurity.

Actually, i guess the pirated software problem is something that can not be resolved at all. There is no uncrackable copy protection mechanism (not even dongles, like we saw whith the last ilok). And as long as people in some parts of the world would never be able to pay regular prices, there will be hackers/cracker groups releasing pirated versions. I have the vague feeling, that some developers would be better off to follow new marketing concepts, like using uncomplicated minimal copy protection like Harrison, Klanghelm or ... Cakewalk do, and going the route of lower prices resulting in more sales. Reaper is another one which actually is quite successful, because they manage to deliver a good product for little money, which makes it easy for people to go the legal route, no matter if student or from a poor country. I have read things on the net like: "Why should i buy software with complicated and error-prone copy protection, registering and customer accounts, if i can download a hassle-free pirated copy for free?" No joke, some people argument like that - people who make a living of studio works! Time will tell, which marketing and pricing models will survive in the long run... Just my personal 2 cents.
The cakewalk lifetime update plan might be the new concept, because the abonnement-like model they chose a while ago might not have been very successful. People generally don't like that idea of abonnements, and despite the fact that Cakewalks model was quite fair and transparent, and not really an abonnement, but payment in rates, it might have not been possible to communicate this to the customers...
