The two vocal files you posted both had the 124 in the chain...which is going to thicken the sound a little too. While I really like the bottom of that first mic, it was just a bit rolled off for modern productions in my opinion. I'm POSITIVE there will be many others. Here's one with a HW tube comp in the chain. https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/voxredd2comp%3Fin%3Djohnandkris/sets/two-moreHere's the one we did last fall https%3A//soundcloud.com/johnandkris/voxreddrs124aFunny, I prefer your old mic, the new one seems almost like there's a trebly brittle overtone thing it's adding.

Are you using a different mic than when I saw you in the fall and we played with the REDD and RS? The clips you did before, while I was there (posted below) sound different and more indicative, the new ones you posted sound bright to me... When are you coming to my place!

I don't totally disagree, but had a hard time making the old one exciting in a mix. If only someone had a new mic that could solve those issues.

Great posts John, thanks. In general, there's soothing of the highs, yet it remains transparent. I think it'll produce truly pro tracks that no one could argue with. Perhaps the vocals were a bit rolled off.. Which mic were you using?

As far as the REDD goes...it's freaking awesome. Not going to get a better mic pre. I think it especially sounds fantastic with these last acoustic tracks. It has a detail on top like a V76.

I'll add to the party - though everybody here has way more experience than I do. Simple bone dry track. My old 1953 J50 into a Lucas CS-4 and then into the REDD.47. No EQ, no compression, no nothing. Typically I'm a Piedmont style blues finger picking guy - but since Johnkenn was putting up strumming acoustic guitar parts I did the same.

I've been doing some mic testing with the REDD.47 and a few of my acoustic guitars. I really like the REDD.47. It sounds big, bold, 3D, stunning - IMO. I'm enjoying that box quite a bit. Vocals, acoustic guitars, upright bass, electric bass all seem very very happy running into that box. My only real problem with it is that I need another one!
And yes Johnkenn that Tverb sounds really quite nice to me. I'm dreading my demo running out. I've sort of sworn off plugin's - but this one is making me think twice.

Just to add to the conversation, I wanted to upload an acoustic guitar track with just the Dizengof D4, (REDD 47 style pre), but when I went to the track, all the audio files were missing, WTF?
I'll try to locate them and fly them back in tomorrow, so this will have to do for now.. This was done as background music for a promo video for my friend's wife's business. It gets strummy later on in the track, I used two mics, the main through the D4 and the ambient through the Apollo. The solo notes are through the D4 too.
Taylor Doyle Deluxe, (tight and bright) > Neumann K84's > Dizengoff D4 > UAD Apollo.

I've been considering a luxury tube pre for the important stuff like lead vocals, wondering if it would provide something extra. The swedish Chandler distributor had one unit for 20% off so I took it.
Did a shootout with a friend today with my AMS/Neves. He suggested we should very quickly lay down a couple of tracks to listen how the pres compared in an arrangement. Took two Schoeps (one routed to the REDD and the other to the 1084) placed as close togeteher as possible and tracked two acoustics, bass and some percussion. Then did the same on vocals with two Flea 49s. This turned out to be the best A/B I've ever done. After grouping in PT we could easily switch between pres. I also put Waves Puigtech at the bus and added some treble, just to hear the different 'sparkle' I got from the pres.
We were both very impressed by the REDD. Not night and day, but still richer, more effortless and more natural than the AMS/Neve. Keeper!
Haven't tried to push it. Not really the style I'm doing usually so not that interested, but got some really good info and directions from Adam today for trying later. I don't hear the forwardness or bite that I've read about in threads. Could be a thing people hear when they push it. To me it sounded simply very pleasant. Recommended!

Can you share the shootout unit7 I'd love to hear it. AMS 1084 is a great pre.

Can you share the shootout unit7 I'd love to hear it. AMS 1084 is a great pre. Hmm, have to check with my buddy. We did Free Fallin.. :-) started with him strumming with thumb, tempo all over the place and all overdubs trying to follow that guitar, no re takes no edits. It's not beautiful. Could perhaps share the instrument tracks but I'm pretty sure he doesn't want me to spread his vocal track

The REDD 47's are a treat to work with, they have a softer, more natural compression to them. Dry, but silky and polished somehow. Very interesting sound. Love the amount of options you can set, for various levels of "lush" or "hair". I almost never use any hairy settings, but I found them pretty plump and fat sounding. Like two large...eh...you know...

Ugh...the WHAM stuff might be a scoche ghey...Might have to opt for the much less feminine solo canon from GM. OK, how 'bout some Tom Waits-ey stuff then? Or Lemmy?

The drummer from my teenage Glam/Metal band Pandora was on that record, Frank LaRocca. Arf Arf records released our demo as a CD posthumously a few years back. Strangely, Pandora has a small cult following online. It was kind of like Steve Marriot singing outtakes from Man Who Sold the World. Frank was incredible, even then at 18 years old. I was 18 yrs old here. Man, I see what you mean by the Marriot comparison (huge Marriot fan, btw) he has that gospel/soul infused edge to the hard rock belting, and is always tunful with surprisingly good enunciation without seeming pretentious - a hard balance to achieve. Cut did seem a bit long though.... was that as entire EP?

Yea, we needed some serious editing. If we'd have continued with proper producer, we'd have cut lots of songs quite a bit shorter. It is an entire album. There's going to be a vinyl release next year, and we'll edit a little out to fit on a record. This was probably done with an SM57, but I don't remember.
I'm most compatible with a U67, so I'd love to try the Chandler and a 67 at the same time.
