also, i think the distressor can be really useful in series with another comp...use the distressor in 2:1 and really fast attack/release to grab just the quick peaks and use the hpf, then follow with something slower.

I like a lot of them too! but hard because alot of the volumes are WAY different so it would take me time to match them. You have to be careful that someone doesn't just listen choose the loud one.... but the distressor 4:1 jumped out at me for its clamp and projection but at the same time it totally CHANGED the vocal timbre but I liked it!

I actually liked some of the plugs too... just not at high gain reduction and ratio's, they suck the life out and sound "dull and over compressed"

I suggest importing all the files into the DAW of your choice and then adjust with the faders. I tried to RMS level match them as best I could but you can fine tune in your DAW.

I grew tired of the distressors after a few years and sold them. Certainly, a good box but I found better for my tastes.

What did you replace them with ? I got a few different things... MU (STA-Level), FET (Urei 1176), VCA (dbx)...etc Sure, costs more this way but I think it's a sonic improvement and much wider variety of sounds.

Let's bump this up. I have a few compressors that I can add just to the list if anyone is interested. Drawmer 1968, RJR Buss Comp, Inward Connections Brute, Art Pro VLA, and an incoming Retro Doublewide and Schmidlin Fed+.

I prefer the STA to an La2a on vocals. What about ur 3a sal? Tony, I really liked the UREI 3a's I had. The UA 3a's weren't right with the release...kinda spongy. Wish I still had the old 3a's now.

very nice. I also thought some of the plugins started to sound dull in the high end in general, and kinda flat or something. I was afraid of that, and suspected it might be like that, after some recent mixing. I was also unsurprised that some of the cheaper units sounded less good than the high ticket items (but not all). I guess it's time to start building. some of these compressors really jumped out at me. It's neat to hear what some of them are kind of about, after just reading, not hearing, or using plugin emulations. I'm amazed that you were able to test this many compressors!

Sal, you're as sick as me...GAS... Speaking of GAS, I am setting up the Midas Venice and preparing to go Hybrid. So much for ITB. Outboard acquisition will be a major theme for me this year.
