Lost a Stereo Cue Send on one of the channels - had to take her out and replace a chip, thought I'd take a snap of it and show off the insides for anybody that hasn't seen one before.

Interesting do all parts still exist? Everything we've needed has been easily ordered so far from Digikey or Mouser. Last time I needed some Dynamics chips (which seemed to be blowing out like crazy last year) I saw they were going to stop stocking them, so I ordered 40 of them, which should hold us over for quite some time. I think we've changed about 15 of them (and put in sockets) out of the 72 channels on the desk. Cue chips are 6 pin and that's easy enough with a desoldering rig, but the Dynamics chips are 12 pin and a pain in the ass - so we socket them just in case the same channel decides to blow at some point in the future.

They both take about the same amount of time to change out, because the Cue chips are buried under the PCB that is at the very top of the picture. So, you have to take 7 knobs off, pull that board away (gingerly), and its located in a tight area between two switches. The manual tells you where the chips are, and the back of the pcbs are all numbered for easy location. I'd say 15 mins from pulling the channel to putting it back in once you know where everything is.

Changing those chips and a few other things like lubing the faders, certain calibration and fixing a few problems in the center section are all I'm really capable of doing. Its just small stuff like this that I've been fortunate enough to pick up from helping the REAL techs over the years.
I have friends that purchased an 80 channel J series from Quad that had lots of little problems. Learned a lot about how to fix the "little" problems on that one too!

...yikes - sorry for the giant pic! thats a serious badass! it's supposed to be the most HIFI SSL ever made, is it true? what are the main op amps it uses? thanx, and congrats on owning a beast of a rig, would love to hear that in person one day!

I definitely don't own it haha. The studio I've been at for about 8 years have it in the A room. Not sure about the opamps Anybody around NYC/NJ area is always welcome to come by and hang for a day!

I read the SSL 9k uses what is often referred to as the Graeme Cohen double balanced design micpre which is what Millenia pre's are based on. Incidentally Mr Cohen passed away a few months ago - RIP.

A lot of the additional circuitry and board real estate in SSL channel strips was taken up by the channel dynamics and 'Total Recall' components. Take all that out of the equation and the channel strips would be half the size along with the power consumption. Of course then you would no longer have an SSL!

Haven't had that problem as of yet!
I'm about to start helping on a helios console project. It was uncrated last week and from what I hear... needs some work haha. To be expected.

Damn I remember having to recap our 6000e to many times.... That's what I see when I look at that there looks to be very few electrolytics on that channel, shouldn't be a big deal actually? and probably why there hasn't been problems for the OP?

Usually a lot of the time was spent trying to find which was the culprit, and even then I would have to recap the whole thing because we always kept it running.
