I never got much from the flipped speakers. Now that we have infinite tracks, we can just run a take of the bleed and just mix it in out of phase although the bleed often enhances the mix.

I can't imagine standing in front of speakers that were out of phase for more than 10 seconds without wanting to blow my brains out. How can anybody do that to cut vocals? Is it not a huge distraction? Drives me nuts too. If I go into a store with a stereo system for music or somebody's house and one of the speakers is out of phase I immediately offer to fix it for them. When I take one of my cars to car shows and hear the D.J.'s out of phase speakers, I have to say something. When I start explaining about the big hole in the middle and how the speakers are out of phase they look at me like I'm nuts and say everything is fine. Now I just shut up and stand to one side.

The problem with hearing is that once we have learned to identify a problem it remains obvious while others may not notice. This is why ABX tests are meaningless unless administered by real experts.

Here is Jim Reeves in 1963, singing into a U67 that's dripping with saliva. I think it depends on the singer's voice, the musical style, the room, etc. No rules - just knowledge and choices.

But those are out of phase STEREO speakers. The trick calls for MONO. However Bob DOES have a point, as long as you're not tracking to tape with a limited channel count.
