Update... I had the Amphion 500 amp hooked up for the last few days but I'm sending it back. It is way bass heavy. Yielding anorexic mixes. Thanks to JK for staying up with me last night and helping me get this thing tuned in!! I'm now running my old Reference 500 amp with them and although the clarity isn't there, I feel it paints a closer sonic picture than did the Amphion. A great amp is needed with all passive speakers.

That amphion amp looks like a class D switching supply amp, it's crazy expensive! U can pick up a class A Adcom for dirt cheap and have JW sweeten it up for far less. I can't imagine Amphion would make a power amp that hypes the bottom on a mixing platform? If so? I'm imagining there is a lot of "hype" on their stuff all together?

It's made by a European company and you can get it as a kit, less expensively. On the GS thread people who use the Amphion amps, seem to like them but peeps do experiment with other amps and a lot of peeps are pleased with Jim's modded Adcom, like me

Well, they are a HiFi company that broke into the studio market. I would imagine that they're not the most neutral sounding thing out there. (I haven't heard them, so just making an assumption and you know how that goes.)

(I haven't heard them, so just making an assumption and you know how that goes.) Well I've heard it and you nailed it, it sounds euphonic. Probably scooped. High end clarity and thumpy bass. Not what I'd consider ideal for mixing. I'm sure a person could learn to mix with it but I don't have the patience. Or the inclination to pay 2k for an amp that I'm struggling with. I recorded this tune yesterday and mixed it quickly this morning using this other amp. And for better or worse, this is what I want my stuff to sound like. It's what I hear in my head when I start something. I've got 200 bucks in this amp I like it just fine. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/65640533/She%20Used%20To%20Be%20Mine.wav

It is a digital switcher in a pretty case. You say that like it's a bad thing. Switch based amplifiers and the distortion inherent vs. AB or A distortion might be up for debate - but there's no way that amplifier's not flat.

historically class D switching amps are notoriously inferior to class A or AB, single ended triode tube amps are arguably much more depthful and musical, but not what you want to mix on due to uncommon and euphonic distortions, the Hypex NC400 is the first class D amp that i know of to compete on the same HIFI level as class A amps, it is neither hyped nor clinical.

Not a fan of digital or switching PSU for critical listening. what can I say Daddy likes current?

I used a very sophisticated method for selecting my power amp: RGO gear heads recommended the jim william's adcom mod: so I bought one: end of story: me happy !
Honestly, the only thing I would change would be getting the more powerful adcom but I , of course, bought mine used but luckily found a 545 mki very cheaply locally.
