This thing just makes everything sound better. But for guitars, it's a God send. Acoustic, e.g., bass, doesn't matter what, it just makes it right. I use it all the time and couldn't do without it.

I'm right there with you. Adds just enough fuzz to cut through the mix. It's great on electric pianos too.

Agreed. An excellent plug. All that said, I'm trying to get outside the box to the Silver Bullet, LA3a, LA2a or a few other choice pieces of analog to get some of the same love - but in the analog world. My favorite part of Decap is the EQ. Nice filters and a tilt EQ are so easy to make sound good.

decap is totally cool stuff, but i'm with bill, drive the shit out of a vp28 or other hardware and you get sounds that set you apart a bit, the plug word has one glaring drawback to me, EVERYONE has the same plugs=same sound.
The FabFilter Saturn is also a totally amazing saturation plug, the control and the fidelity in 4x oversample mode is just ridiculous for a plugin.

Haven't found anything else that has as good a sounding distortion

Klanghelm SDRR is my go to for distortion/grit/hair. Demoed the decapitator and it wasn't doing anything I couldn't get out of the SDRR.

Decapitator is awesome. Great implementation of tilt eq,shelving filters and distortion.

I have most of the main UAD plugins so buying Soundtoys 5 seemed a bit like I'd be doubling up on a lot of plugins. But Decapitator looks different to anything I already own.

I think you'll love it. It works for any genre.

That is my argument too for doing a few extra roundtrips. Software Synths into the 1073 and back, makes them sound great and they sit better. Guitars, Bases or Keys B3 get some real tube saturation by SPL, not too much, just that the op starts to smile. To my ear software saturation is diffrent, the dynamics of software saturates feel diffrent. I like both, but when in doubt I always use the hardware. If we talk those SW tools we should not forget the good old Inflator, as well as the PSP Mixsaturator. Decap is for my taste too expensive for what it does. I keep in mind that I have great transformer simulations when using the UADs 1176s with no compression. Mixing ITB I use them on busses, they make a good job. Not as good as the real deal but a great tool....

I'm with cowboy on this one. Great plugin. I find myself using it on more instruments than I ever thought but use it very judiciously. It doesn't take much to ruin your audio but just the right amount makes a track cut through. The eq is so important with this plug. I put it up there with the Klanghelm MJUC in that they both have a sound that I can't find in any other plug....

I like it to rough up drums that are too clean and it will make a bass cut tv speakers very nicely without getting silly high end sounding.

Yeah, It's one of those plugs that once opened, stays open. I really dig Radiator too...

I agree, It's really good. I've used it on the 2 bus lots of times. I've used it as a "saturation bus" and sent groups of stuff to it. Parallel drum smash. I've used echo boy that way too. All around bad ass set of plugs from Sound Toys.

So how about Decapitator versus SDRR? I own neither but was leaning towards SDRR.

So how about Decapitator versus SDRR? I own neither but was leaning towards SDRR. Do this: 1) demo decapitator 2) buy SDRR for $30. It's amazing. 3) buy decapitator if it isn't doing it for you. Edit: I'm a huge Klanghelm fanboy, full disclosure. Love the business model and plugins.
