Now that some time has passed, these mics have come to my attention particularly the Spirit.
Does anyone have some new experience with them?
I keep hearing them on drum clips and liking what they are doing a lot, enough that I might try one out.
I also love the way they look. Like a Josephson but affordable.

I grabbed an Origin about a month back when I was in a bind. Went to pick up a wa87 for a session the following day and they were sold out. so the sales dude talked me into trying it out. it was female hip hop vox and it worked well but I returned it for store credit until the wa87 is in stock. not a super exciting tale but I did admire the build quality and sound was good into the Antelope stock preamp. it does seem like a low price but if you consider it doesn't come with the typical price inflators (shock mount, case, cable etc) then it makes sense. it is threaded for a stand on the bottom which was nifty. the artist was pleased with the recording. supposed to pick up the 87 next weekend.

Impossible to position without it. Also, picks up too much floor boom without a mount.

I thought it sounded a little flat. It's impressive that the Origin is close in quality to the Lauten Atlantis, but there's just something about some FET mics that just doesn't do it for me. The U47 FET, Lauten Atlantis, and this Origin, all seem boring and flat. Granted, there may be situations they come in handy, but as a lead vocal mic, I'd look elsewhere.
The WA87 is probably one of the smartest values on the market today. Very close to the uber bucks U87, and a proven sound as a workhorse mic. At $600, I'd go with the sure thing. In my experience, better than that begins around $2,000.

I have a pair of Origins - I try to get mics in pairs. I've used them everywhere now. Sometimes they're exactly what I'm looking for... and sometimes they're not. That's why I have my wee family of mics. If I lost them or whatever, I would buy Aston again. My own experiences mostly align with those from this review.

jampa, what application have you found the Aston works best for you? Oh, and welcome to the forum!
I always look for how a mic sounds for the main vocal first. Mainly because I'm a singer/songwriter, and I need only a couple of good mics to do what I do at home.
I can appreciate any mic that fills a specific need though. If for instance, something's great on toms, or special on pedal steel or something else, that's certainly a good thing. But if we're talking about the Aston mic, I would keep looking if I was seeking an all-arounder that doesn't leave you wanting on lead vocals. That's why I mentioned the WA87. I'm sure the Stam 87 is really good too.

G'day!
Here's some recent placements:
Guitar amp - gasket/outer rim of speaker cone. Combined with ribbon mic in centre of speaker cone, ala Ross Hogarth.
Bass amp - centre of speaker cone. Blended with DI.
Tomtoms - close mic.
Overheads - spaced pair, ala George Massenburg.
Front of kick - close mic.
Lead vocal - close mic.
So, for me it's a matter of throwing up some mics at the start of the session, recording a soundcheck, and then maybe swapping mics out for whatever reason. I have a rough idea of what the Origin is going to do to a source and I set it up if it's what we're going for. Sometimes it kicks ass on lead vocals, sometimes it sucks. No love lost. The right tool for the job. We move on.
Also, I use them with the Rycote shockmounts. And yep the head basket works to diffuse grill resonances in a similar fashion to the Josephson C715/C716. Makes the sound very clear.
