Glad someone finally mentioned Mike Watt! IMO he is to punk/hardcore what Jamerson was to pop/rock/funk...creating a foundation for guys like Flea and Col. Claypool to build on. And I'll add Darryl Jenifer (Bad Brains) and Joe Lally (Fugazi). Stu Oh man, I keep playing the "Waiting Room" bassline every time I pick up the bass lately. So addictive. I've been jamming some Flea riffs too. The Demos is the best...should've been their 1st LP! Sometimes, I put Waiting Room on repeat for an hour or so...I flippin' love that song. I'll do the same with fIREHOSE's Brave Captain...WATT!!!

My old friend Kenny Aaronson might very well have played with more top artists than any bass player known to man. He's a great guy. His style wasn't exactly what I thought would fit my music, but I gotta say that when he was with Bob Dylan, he was in a league of his own.

Ron Carter playing at the Village Vanguard while I was...fungally enhanced was an impossibly sensually aural delight, as well was jamming once with Jaco. I swear, for that 45 minutes I never ever played better and never have since. I wish that we had taped it. Delmar Brown played keys with Rick ? (Louisiana drummer, rock fucking solid) on drums. Blissfully and graciously, Jaco took us all on a trip that day, with Delmar pulling things out of the ethers to quench my wanting soul and to blind me to everything but the moment at the tips of my fingers of a '64 creme Tele. Rick was my beating heat.

The kid reminded me of one, Guy was offered a Juliard Scholarship for Tuba and String bass, instead joined the Army where he was 1st Tuba / Bass First Div Army band, said he new this way he knew he wasn't going to end up drafted and infantry in Korea. He would eventually die of a pituitary gland tumor that over the years would result in fingers to big to play . I called him dad.

ignore the incredibly bad video editing, the Jaco tune "teen town" was always a jaw dropper!

Wow many great bassmen already mentioned. Even Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen... I want to mention some, who have not been covered. Jeff Ament for bringing some awesome bass lines into the grunge. (Pearl Jam/Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog) I guess he is the main reason i bought Pearl Jam albums.
And Peter Steele RIP (Type-O-Negative). More for his overall musicality and awesome personality. He is the reason i bought a Bogart bass. Heard he used it in studio, and it just had something to it. Also one of the "bipolar bass brothers", like Jaco, and also died much too young.
Phil Lynott!(Thin Lizzy)
Stanley Clarke! (you really forgot him?!?)
Dave Holland (just for Bitches Brew upright bass)
and Eberhardt Weber (Pat Metheny/Kate Bush/Jan Garbarek...). Loved the things he did in the 70s/80s. I heard from Martin Kolbe he can't play anymore because of a paralysis due to an apoplectic stroke. :-(

..too many different genres, and to pick one player is to settle on one genre, right? So in no particular order..
Jaco Pastorius (technically earthshattering - but more importantly breaking a lot of ground where function is concerned) Leland Sklar (they're not bass parts - they're melodies) Eberhard Weber (his seminal ECM solo albums blew my mind) Scott Lafaro (I'm surprised his name hasn't come up on this thread) Steve Rodby
These are all technically great players and if I gave it some thought it might be twice as large, but if I were to lower the 'technical' standard and think in terms of influences and those whose work has had an impact on me as a musician - then the list becomes quite large. Hmm.. Maybe I have no favorites.

Speaking of Victor Wooten..
I was just researching bass pickups and came across this solo bass performance. I didn't even think it was possible to play some of the ways he does:

Wooten always struck me as a wonderful composer/producer/musician that happens to play bass. That's where he really shines imo. Don't get me wrong, he grooves like a motherfucker with Bela and the Flecktones but I think his solo stuff is top of class. Also EMG's do not sound like that when I've tried them!!;-)

I just remember *why* i was so fascinated with Eberhardt Weber's stuff. It is because i never heard this kind of electric bass tone before. No wonder, since Eberhardt Weber *invented* the electric upright bass.

While punk bass is still discussable, I think Lou Barlow's chord heavy style of bass is absolutely stellar. Really brings the energy to the power trio form most lack. Bob Weston of Shellac also does it, but Lou's is more like a guitar style than Bob's very rhythmic post punk style. I've linked a Dinosaur Jr. live track here, but the Sebadoh stuff he also does is phenomenal. Anyone who listened to anything from Fugazi, Nirvana even up to Foo Fighters should give Sebadoh's Bakesale a listen.

Ha, that reminds me of Hüsker Dü, the band that was grunge a decade earlier than anyone else! Btw, also a nice bassman, Greg Norton, the man who had a hipster beard definitely before it was mainstream, LOL.

The bass player who does the majority of our sessions when we need bass. Upright, electric, he's fast, great and adds mojo to every track. Besides he's one of the most renown bass players in Australia, has about 40 years of experience playing with just about every major artist over here and some abroad (live and album sessions) and we can afford him!

If people are posting bands as good as Husker Du I'm literally obliged to post this. The fucking counterpoint between the guitar and bass on this - insanely beautiful stuff!
