If you are a musician/mixer like me, who records some things near the console, it's a good idea to make sure the headphone amp is turned down before making any eq adjustments I had recorded something earlier in the evening, then went to baseball practice. Came home, started mixing and thought, (this sounds like shit). Only to realize that I'd left my headphones turned up and was hearing some gnarly stuff from them instead. A friendly reminder from your good pal cowboy..

This happened to me just yesterday and I thought to myself has anyone else had this problem. It was with getting basic levels listening at lower volumes...Made me feel ridiculously incompetent.

A friendly reminder from your good pal cowboy.. I've got my system wired so that I can flip between headphones and the monitors at the press of a button. i.e. if I'm listening to my monitors the headphones are automatically muted - an either or setup. I used to have the opposite happen, have the cans on and the monitors were still up lol.

Yup. No reason to, and plenty of reasons against having your headphones and speakers live at the same time. Simple to accomplish as well in most studios.

Ha Try 4 to 5 play back headphones roaring into the main cutting floor sometime. Instantly, when I hear bad tone, I look there first.
