Anyone running music software do the upgrade and lose compatibility with audio/midi/remote hardware or software?
new Cubase and OneNote both require 10.10, which I can't get anyway....but, seems like it's either time to upgrade the MBAir's OS or just stick with "compatible with the whole audio world" 10.8 and punt until I can afford a Surface Pro to replace it.
One thing I'm worried about is Frontier's Tranzport. I've tried to warm up to iOS remotes, but they're simply inferior on so many levels....since 10.10 requires signed kexts, I'll probably have to hack that and open a security hole on my machine by doing so--but, I don't care if it means I can use my Tranzport.
Just wondering if anyone has stories....good or bad.

EC was a little funny at first ( 3 months ago). I was runing apollo and pro tools ( now fully EC certified by avid) but seems fine now. I run a 2012 mbp i7 with up to date OS.

What do you mean "funny"? What changed that it's "fine now"?
Side note....One Note Online will do what I really need from the desktop. I would imagine the portable devices will see more use--they just can't attach audio files (create from the mic but not attach)....online via Chrome I can do that fine.
One Note is the next step in my migration to Surface as my single Turning Machine. Not really music related--other than lyrics/quick demo...but....if the Air, with it's slightly slower i5 can handle musica production....and the IThings with OneNote sync keep that side of my orgnaization OCD handled....I'll move to a Surface next year when, knock on wood, money won't be as tight.

Running El Capitan on a 2012 MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt (no FireWire ports)
Using Reaper with a pair of Alesis HD24XR's connected as follows...
MacBook Pro > Thunderbolt/FireWire adaptor cable > Presonus FireStudio Lightpipe > Alesis HD24XR ADAT's
So far seems okay.

If I had a time machine, I would go back to 10.8 and stop myself from upgrading my MBP from there. Also a 17" 2012 MBP. Ran beautifully on 10.8 but 10.10 is a disaster for me.
I'm keeping my Mac Pro studio computers on 10.7 (Nehalem) an 10.8 (Westmere).
So, in short DON'T UPGRADE!!!

I tried the install on a cloned copy of my OS drive rather than commit to it right off the bat on my Mac Pro.
It appeared to have a severe dislike for the composite audio device I had created in Audio Midi - I use an RME Multiface II and a Fireface 800 as a single composite device. Both devices seemed to function ok, but the composite device I had created was pretty much scrambled. I'm sure I probably could've just created a new one, but the idea of remapping and relabeling all the i/o was a little more than I wanted to contend with so I just bagged it and went back to my original drive.
From where I sit it doesn't seem as if the Captain really offers any "gotta have it" capabilities so, for the time being, I don't feel all that distraught about staying with Yosemite.

Basically Pro tools worked but I would have screens close. I recall some aspects of the gui would function inconsistently, click on record and it wouldn't go red but would record, so it seemed that the functionality was there but the gui was misbehaving.
Anyway all good for a while now.

I'm honestly leaning towards returning a gift before I've even officially gotten it.
My whole "back nine studio design" was to simply use what was around--the only thing that I "needed" to make the laptop work was a solid USB (or TB) interface....since the big old Win7 DAW uses a PCI RME. So, Santa (or Satan?) got me a NI Komplete6 interface--which it looked like was well reviewed as low latency and has drivers from 10.5-10.11 (as well as Win7/8/10)....how could I lose with "works with anything"? Let me tell you--I plugged it in....the analog IO works....the SPDIF OUT works to feed the Benchmark....the SPDIF in will not sync. I tried both using the SPDIF out and adpating hte AES output of the Burl to RCA....neither would sync. At all. Contakt NI support--"that's because the machine doesn't meet the minimum spec of 10.9-case closed". They literally have a 10.7 driver on their site....
I pulled the 10.8 running imac from the office to check that OS....nope. I've tried making he setting in Audio/MIDI and from within Cubase itself.
So, they've literally changed the firmware/hardware of the interface that has been available for years so that it no longer (fully) works with older OSs. It's fucking class compliant USB, even. Works without a driver same as loading one....how can a CLASS COMPLIANT fucking unit with a SPDIF input not actually accept SPDIF input? I guess I can return it and pay more for some other unit....or ironically pickup some unit rendered useless by Apple for cheap on Craigslist. Quick search says I can pick up a Tascam unit for $50 BECAUSE it doesn't work after 10.8--they upgrade, no longer works and they have to buy something else....
I dunno. It's amazing to me how much of a minefield Apple has made for audio over the last few years. between not being able to replace drives and RAM....and such insane hardware and software incompatibility--it really appears that 10.8 is a kind of line in the sand. What's more funny about it--is I don't see any under the hood advantage. When they did the 10.6-10.8 they were fully 64bit and fully intel code....what are we actually getting with the new OS really?
Since OneNote's web version does what I need it to do....I guess I'll just return the interface. Not upgrade Cubase. Do a fresh install of 10.8.

Do a fresh install of 10.8. Please tell me an easy way to do this. My MBP is just coughing and wearing under the El Capitan bottleneck.

If you've downloaded previous Mac OS X versions from the Mac App Store, you can re-download them from your App Store account. Sign in, then go to 'purchases.' All your software you've bought or upgraded is still there. I've got Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite. Mountain Lion was on my laptop machine when I bought it, I never downloaded it. Maybe somebody here can download Mountain Lion for you and pass it on.

I have 10.8 downloaded and on a bootable thumb drive....and fwiw, is still available in the App Store for purchase for $20--unlike 9&10 which are only available if you previously "purchased" (for free). I recently used it to do a clean install on the old iMac who can only go to 10.9--because only a fool would put the LAST OS for a given model-Apple has a LONG history of the lowest hardware on the totem running like a dog. Anyway, it's probably not in keeping with the license agreement that I ALSO put it on the laptop, but it WAS actually for the laptop--as we bought it with 10.7 right before 8, so it was a grace period upgrade I never installed. Here it is still available: www.apple.com/shop/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lionLast OS, if memory serves that will run TDM hardware....it is the "final" OS of an era and will likely be security patched for a good amount of time like 10.5 being the last for Motorola chips. 10.5, 10.8....and then the rest will be like iOS. I predict soon they won't let you downgrade. like the new Cubase, and nearly EVERYTHING for iOS, they will support the current and last OS release only. If they give you a hard time about buying it...ley me know and we can work something out. DO NOTE: the OS does NOT include the iLife suite. Make sure you have those available to your AppleID in the App Store before reinstall. You will need to download iPhoto, GarageBand, and iMovie after the clean install. I had no issues doing this--but, that didn't stop me from freaking out "where the F is iPhoto?", which is the only one of those I use.

Recently had a drive fail on an early 2008 iMac. Didn't want to run El Capitan so managed to download Mavericks from my previous Apple Store purchases and installed it instead.
It wasn't a smooth process however.
After creating a bootable USB Mavericks installer I kept getting an error message saying the OS I was installing could not be verified and may be corrupted. I even downloaded Mavericks a second time (over 5 gigs) as I was told by AppleCare my original download may have been corrupted.
Turns out Mavericks was not the problem, I had removed the motherboard battery to in order to check it while I had the iMac apart. This reset the iMac's internal clock back to Jan 1st, 2001 and was the cause of the aborted OS installations. Once I reset the clock Mavericks installed without another hitch.
If you ever have a similar problem when installing an OS on a Mac check the internal clock to make sure it is correct.

Wuzza I still use OS 10.06 on the studio mac pro because I cant imagine something more stable. And 10.06 is the reason I do not buy a new MP. If I need more horse power I use my 2012 MBP as Logic Node. It gets stupid with Apples major os upgrades every year....

10.7 is actually better than 10.6
Snow Leopard was good, but Lion is even better.

....did you enable unsigned kext (driver) loading? If not--there's no chance its ever going to work--Apple turned the signing requirement on, so anything old will NOT run even if it will work fine. I think they turned it on before 10.11....but, any upgrade probably turns it back on if you turned it off for previous ones. sudo commands here: github.com/RogueAmoeba/Soundflower-Original/issues/39I've been using the Windows box....the AIr has decided it's battery needs replacing....apparently Apple recommends you never run their laptops plugged into power for any length of time. Um....that's 90% of what I do. Anyway....
