I found the difference between the Haufe and the AMI transformer very noticeable. AMI fair bit bigger and has a lot more weight to the low end sound then some of the haufe models i have owned. The Haufe doesnt get in the way and impart its own flavour to the signal source. There are advantages to each model.

You're right hadaja. I preferred the AMI transformer, I like the character and the low level detail. Once Oliver Archut passed, BSA seems to be concentrating on a high end customer in Europe and hasn't really gotten back into the US market as far as I know.
I sure wish I could have afforded to keep my UM-17R as an alternate.

I first tried a BN K7 capsule in my UM17, but found it a little too dark. Then, I replaced it in 2016 with a HK47, and have kept it there since.
Also, one of the super-cheapo caps in the PSU popped. I replaced all the caps with Nichicon, and the noise level went down significantly.

They did make an improved power supply in the later versions. It was quieter.

They did make an improved power supply in the later versions. It was quieter. I remember the UM17R had an upgraded PSU, capsule, GAC, and Rycote mount. My #91 UM17 came with the original, mass produced, asian variety PSU. I added my own GAC and Rycote along with the HK47. I'm not aware that the basic UM17 ever had an upgraded supply.

Not sure how much difference the PS and cable make but it's a great sounding mic.

The upgraded power supply was a little quieter, giving the mic a bit more transparency. You might not have sought it out, but when you hear it with he upgrade you'd certainly want that one.
Good to see the cowboycoalminer checking in here.

Good to see the cowboycoalminer checking in here. Any hints to check for which PSU is which if I'm looking? I'm not opposed to paying for a new PSU if I have the less quality version. Or make upgrades. Haven't had an opportunity to work with the mic yet. Too much going on around the house this summer.
