Thanks, I've heard the SM-7 but not the RE-20 I listened to the Amy Winehouse clip with her singing through the RE-20. Could have been the preamp, but I thought there was an unpleasant distortion in her voice at times. It sounds to me like they clipped the pre into the converters.

Could have been the preamp, but I thought there was an unpleasant distortion in her voice at times. I used the RE20 on a couple of different nasally loud rock singers and there was this harsh zingy edge that I could never quite dial out. I think the SM7B would have been a much smarter choice in those scenarios. Or even the SM58 or MD441. I ended up selling the RE20 and I really haven't missed it much.

About the kicks to the curb for the RE20. Make sure you weren't listening to an RE27. I was asked by EV back then where to go with the RE20. I said, try making it sound like a condenser mic. The RE27 came out. I have an early one. Without the top EQ rolled off by the on-board switch, it does sound sort of metallic. I never considered the RE20 "metallic."

Re20 gets used a lot around here. Inside Kick, Vocals and guitars.
The D190e is also great but it is all about placement. I use it on picking acoustic parts a lot. It doesn't sound as good on strummed parts.
Nothing to wrong with a SM58 either.
EV 635a almost never gets used. It is one of those mics I bought because a bunch of people talked about how great it is. It does nothing for me.
I need to buy a SM7 as well. I have used them a bunch at studios and they are handy.
I like dynamic mics. They are fun.

I just did a drum session today where I used my Heil PR-30's on Toms for the first time. I gotta tell you I was pretty happy. It made the toms sound like...well....Toms.

Regards, Ty Ford Talk about entirely different strokes for different folks! The RE27 is my absolute favorite dynamic microphone and yes, the tone switches offer a lot of options. IMHO, it is a tremendous improvement on the RE20.
