as always, "good" is whatever reaches out and grabs you, music is a church of many religions, one man's god is another man's devil(ie.. "Disco Sucks", "Bro Country Rules"), just usually on a much lesser intensity level than theological deities may evoke haha.
I come from the school of "don't bore me", I like Chris Stapleton, he has a tone beast voice, but he is certainly not stepping out of or beyond an already over mined box imo.
My favorite quote of all time when it comes to creating music is Jeff Beck "i guess you can do anything if it's not boring", irony= plenty of people think Jeff Beck is boring.... bastards!

a couple of you commenters are reacting like what I said is blasphemy and sacrilege lol I know you mean I'm one of "the posters". But it's really nothing like that. Isbells last album would be considered boring to most, but the more I listened to it, the more I "got it". Many forms of art. I like them all for the most part, tempo songs are my favorite for sure, but why ignore the other half of the art form you know?

Notice that Gallien Krueger right up front? I did notice that! Also noticed a very small Fender combo for the jazzmaster, and some sort of Matchless or something over near Dave Cobb (I think?) I still don't own a proper bass amp head so those types of things get my attention. Usually I just use my Showman. I guess I have to agree that Chris Stapleton is a big improvement over the status quo, seems authentic, obviously has talent, and I also have to kind of agree with BannedChuck. But I think the album sounds really good, including the band. I guess it just depends how much you personally respond to loud twangy vocals and whiskey lyrics. There's no denying the guy has a soulful voice. I'm personally more interested in messed up weirdos like Sturgill Simpson, but that's just where I'm coming from as a person. No need to trash talk Stapleton, (or anyone,) this isn't Gearslutz.

i personally wouldn't care what he's singing about, as long as he's singing over a band playing similar arrangements like in that CMA performance.

Sorry Chuck, I wasn't trying to speak for you, just interpreting my version of a similar idea. To me lyrics are absolutely a dealbreaker affair in popular music styles. I must be really picky, I don't know. Kind of like what Randge said, EVERYTHING is important. (to me) I agree the production could be more epic like the VMA show. I guess they were going for more of a stripped down classic country sound on the record.

Randy is no doubt a fish to water talented, and seems about a nice a guy as he can be, i look forward to meeting him one day, i also have visions of him ripping some slide phrases on my tunes. As far as Mr Staplton's incredible voice, I think it all comes down to believability, I believe Chris's voice and delivery are badass, it's just that i've heard the same ole, same ole lyric and song structure 1,000's of times already, i'm looking for someone with his level of talent to take me somewhere, and make me believe something completely and refreshingly different, i know it's easier said than done, I think the boredom for me is probably because i'm old as Fuck! haha
Now get off my lawn ya damn kids!!

Welp, I listened to the vid the other day and shut it down half way through. I let everyone have their parade. So after all the hoopla, I gave it another chance and watched it all. I got zilch from all of the frontmen/persons.
Not denying the talent, but as far as I've always been concerned, Timber can jump in the lake. His vocals peels paint off the wall for me, and Stapleton's timbre is like some kind of etching solution to strip epoxy. Not my idea of vocals that can be listened to for any length of time. And the content was no-wheres-ville.
Since this is an award for the best, the only conclusion I reached was: "what does the CMA know". And all of the sheep on the front row would make my channel flipper finger twitch like a PWM; if I had a TV.
my 5 cents. I'm sure that people are pressed forward to meet, greet, and suction, which makes me glad I'm not anywhere near that scene. Ok, that's a dime...
So, I don't listen to Country Music from the last decade or two, so what do I know. I only know what I like. Cue the flower power emoticon.

People will not shut up about Chris, and not people in the industry, my Facebook is cluttered with people I've known for years that are fascinated with how many hits Chris has written and how ultimately pissed they are at country radio for not knowing anything about him. I've even gotten several calls from folks back from my hometown asking me about him and I tell them there is so much good music out there they have no idea about that doesn't get played.
Now i'm starting to see people either "listening" or "talking about" guys like Sturgil Simpson along with Chris and a lot more that is pretty much what I've been listening to along with early '00 and '90 country for a few years now. I have always believed that for at least 5 years now people have been longing for music with substance but just didn't know the avenue to start looking, now there is a clear cut path and not a bunch of damn dirt roads. The biggest confusion I think people had when myself and others were bitching about bro country music was that we were wanting to return to previous music, that wasn't the case and no matter how much you tried to explain to them they didn't get it. Now, they get it, now themselves they are pissed off they've been tranced into thinking what they've been listening to for the last 6 years was "Country." I can't help but laugh when I here those two from Florida Georgia Line talking about their new songs and how pleased they were that they were thinking "deeper" in the writing. Anyone who watched them follow up Chris and Justin instantly knew (they also knew themselves) that their run is coming to an abrupt end. You could even see them trying so hard to sell that song while performing it that they came off as scared. The audience said thank you to Chris and Justin, the FGL boys said thank you to a near totally quiet crowd.
It's a good feeling seeing this happen.

Well, if Chris isn't available, I'd like to work with Randy next time I'm in Nashville, if he'll have me :-) I cut there every project that comes across my desk. If you can't get the sound you're looking for at Randy's you'll have to head to another planet. The last project I did over there about a month ago is a full 10 song album for a gal, soon as I get it done I'll post it over in the other section so folks can hear just how good Randy's place sounds. He's got that place dimed in and gear wise he's got all the flavors for the snow cone.
