I have shipped a ton with UPS and Fedex. Both love to deny claims even when clearly at fault. USPS is the worst at claims, its not even worth trying (go figure).
The solution is USPS shipping through Endicia and insure through Endicia. The 2 claims I have had have all been easily delt with. Every other time has been a nightmare. USPS is also cheaper when you ship through Endicia and you get the benefit of no brokerage fees of USPS shipping internationally. So you get cheaper better shipping and cheaper better insurance.
You still have to pack like EMRR suggest when you are shipping mics or other gear.

Canadian post ran over a box with BA-1A's in it with a truck, admitted it. Still took USPS a full year to process and pay. Same on a package that went missing in Tiawan the week of an earthquake, but they paid.
When I receive something damaged from total lack of packaging, I lean on the shipper regarding their incompetence, pointing out the claim will never get paid. Generally gets a refund right away.
Looks like Endicia really requires $16/mo service to access all features, and insurance looks deeply discounted compared to USPS, so even a moderate amount of shipping would be worth signing up if it's really better. At a glance I can't tell if shipping rates are competitive against USPS online discount or not, that might change it.
