Maybe I’ll grow out of tape sims at some point but VTM usually gets used somewhere in a mix for me. Usually just on the busses but last mix I had it on every channel and some channels had Kazrog Pure Iron or Decapitator as well. I bounced the whole thing to a 3M M79. Maybe I just like distortion.

I am always surprised that no one of the tape lovers gave Airwindows ToTape5 a try. www.airwindows.com/totape5/"ToTape5 is the best Airwindows analog tape emulation. It builds upon the previous four versions (which have been some of my best sellers) and incorporates everything learned from the Purest series of plugins, to produce a tape emulation that does what analog does. (Analog tape does really good things for mixes, and it’s very difficult to get it right without sinking into a morass of overprocessing and digital blandness)... "

I tried it and rejected it, like all the others. I am talking about a mastering context here though. The plugin saturation and compression still have a way to go, compared to hardware, IMO. It sounded great in the feedback path of a delay though.

I used to swear by ua ampex then I had my record mastered to a real ampex: very different.
The real ampex brought a glue and a cohesion that the plug in didn’t..
I definitely think you should mix into it otherwise you are basically pushing your completed mix through a filter: used to have a lot of plugs on my 2 bus,, now very little.
I have the audioscape ssl comp my wa273eq and my brainworx mastering eq plug and also Sonarworks on my 2 buss,no tape sims.

Is anybody using a Burl B2 ADC? I've been told the transformer has a way of "shaving off the digital sound" but have no freakin idea what that means.
Being in my early 20s, I never got to experience tape. It's frustrating to not have a point of reference to say anything of substance in these conversations, but on the bright side, I don't "miss" the sound of anything ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yes, the Burl does something very nice to everything. There are other brands doing similar things now. I like how the Dangerous Music Convert can add analogue vibe too. They’re all quite pricey though.
If I had bought the Burl when I tried it 3 years ago I’d still be glad I did, but buying today, I might look elsewhere. The Burl is sweet, but quite colored.

I'm coming in late to this thread, haven't read everything. I use UAD Ampex ATR-102 on mix bus sometimes, but not always. Quite a bit less recently in fact. Used to kind of abuse it. One thing I like to do with the Ampex is to "finish" a mix I'm tired of working on just by getting some color from the top down. Sort of a 4-track PortaStudio demo mentality. Put some tape dirt on it. Just as sort of a rough mix/demo kind of mixdown.
Found out that SIR Standard Clip Pro ($25 plugin) gets me a lot of the joy of tape sims, just a simple clipper. Makes things seem louder too.
I track all of my drums to Softube Tape. It helps a lot. I use Softube Tape once in a while on mix bus too. Completely different to the UAD ampex.
UAD Oxide goes on a lot of individual tracks as needed. It's a little bit subtle but I like what it does.
When I got the Apollo for the first time, the tape sims were the thing I was the most excited about. That being a sound I've been chasing since I started playing guitar as a teenager. I'm still pretty excited about that sound, and the better tape sims. It's strange I don't own the UAD Studer by now.
Cubase has a plugin called QuadraFuzz 2. It has a multiband saturator. Tape is one of the colors available. I just started using this for the first time today, it's pretty cool for a stock plugin. I'm using it to really dial in a guitar amp tone with PRS Archon as the amp sim.
I love mixing with multiple stages of color or saturation, just makes things sound interesting.

The UAD A800 sounds great with the 250, 30ips, but you need to gainstage it correctly. If you pull the input down a bit, and boost the output, it sounds REALLY good. The 7.5 abs 15 don’t do it for me. They honestly just sound like they put a filter on the top. Thanks for this tip! I just tried playing with TB Reelbus, everything all the way lowest settings, 30ips, boost the output. Then slowly dialed in some rec level & other stuff until the VU meter barely starts to move. First impressions it seems more usable in this way. Not going to replace the real thing for me, but it has a vibe. I'll have to revisit some other sims.
