Honestly, after owning a TLM49, a TLM103 and the TLM102 I would at least try the 102 out. It's a really nice mic that can also close mic a snare drum (I don't ever do this but you could). I also on the budget friendly side of things really like the CAD E100 if you can find one. I think he did much better with the multi-pattern, multi-voiced 3U Audio MKID than he would have done spending twice the price for a cardioid only, transformer-less, SMT-built LDC mic with a budget-level capsule...does the TLM102 sound good?...yes, nice mic...$700 good?...not in my opinion...if it did not have a "N" badge on it, it's a $200 mic all day... You might do well to look into what 3U Audio Pty Ltd is offering in terms of completely hand-soldered/assembled LDC mics featuring proprietary custom capsules and transformers, all built in their own facility, with very strict QC, very much the way the Germans built mics 20-30 years ago... I've never heard of this company, looks interesting

I think the 864 is inspired by a Federal compressor. Can't remember which one. Matt and I had a brief convo about it, but it's going to be more smooth and lazy than some of the other's you've mentioned, and I don't say that as anything bad, not at all. That's what I want on Vocals..... nice slow release so it sounds beefed but totally natural. I built AC's 2 channel 176 but haven't figured out where I'm getting a pure ground loop somewhere, not buzz, but just solid BUMUZZZZZZZZ. I think because mine is a REV 2 and there isn't much docs on it I can't find the right jumper diagrams, one day I'll trace it down. You could get a Pro VLA and change the tubes, IC stages and the AC coupling caps and have a really nice comp, maybe $400 all said and done? 2 channels too. There are about 4 reviews already at gearslutz and 70 units shipped last week so many more to come!

I like the CAPI idea. JLM also makes a nice 500 series compressor kit (or so I have heard).

Federal AM 864 Great sounding comps if well kept. That's got me interested in this D 864. That said, I want a pair of Jeff's 500 comps first.

CAPI FC526. You could buy for around $320 and pay Someone here to put it together. I think Joel Phillips charges $100. My FAVORITE tracking comp. Can you give a bit more detailed explanation of why you love the CAPI FC526 John? I'm unclear as to what it's based on (API?) or what it sounds like. I've built a VP26 and a Lola, but this build scares me a little as the CAPI site says its an advanced build. Sure - IMHO, they are what the 1176 was trying to be...They can be fast as hell and the gain reduction is absolutely transparent. It will add a small sonic footprint depending on which opamp you go with, but all are very complimentary. Also, you've got a HPF...Now, there are really cool things about the 1176's - they can add that distortion and sucking, dirty sound - and that's definitely a thing. These are cleaner...IMO, they are just fantastic tracking comps because they're kind've hard to screw up. I think I posted files of really pushing them somewhere...I'll see if I can find them...I've jokingly called them Volume Monkeys because that's what it's like...fader riders.

BTW, I think it's the calibration that's the hard part of the build...I had mine built...

Clean as a whistle! But the Warbler MKID the OP bought is a another beast altogether. That's some classic U87 sound, with a top end you can tailor.

Many (mine included) are of the Warbler I (not "ID) but it's the same mic but cardioid only and with a different headbasket.

Well I ordered a Stam SA-2A and a Dizengoff D864 a while back and am waiting for both of them to get here. It's a good time to be looking for gear.

I'd love to hear your impressions when you get them fogotteng.I have the Warm Audio WA76, and would love a vocal tracking compressor like the LA2A or a Sta-Level. If the D864 is in that vein, I'm really interested.
