I notice that at any given time, there are TONS of guests on here. Of course, that could be "google bots"...Just wondering if I should require login. Don't think Google could index the board if it requires login, but it would be nice to grow this board through word of mouth. I don't know - just thinking out loud.

Your call...I only tend to sign in when I have something to say...but, I don't mind signing in the read either. But, just so you get a picture that the "guests" might be the same people...

I wouldn't do it . I think its best to let threads show up in google searches so everyone can see the info here , which might motivate new ones to register .

As someone somewhere else mentioned...Google search hasn't really gotten us any members...

Have to admit that I'm too lazy to log in if I'm just browsing threads but that's just me.

I say don't do it, it's gonna take a bit of time, but the forum will grow, and google will be critical to that growth.

As someone somewhere else mentioned...Google search hasn't really gotten us any members... Type in Google " Ross Martin 8 channel converter " , Real Gear comes up second right after GS . Having thread titles with specific pieces of gear , like " telefunken m80 " , that really helps too .

I just invited someone to have a look over here, if a login is required, I fear that these people will not come. You might drive away potential members.

I don't think Google has been near this site. Typing in Real Gear Online into Google just gets me a heap of people talking about steroids. Without SEO they'll probably leave you be.

I'd say no. If it were me looking to join a forum, I usually peruse the forum first to see if it even strikes my interest before joining. Having to join before looking might turn away more people than you would think..

I would say No to required login at this point. I think it would kill growth to some extent.

I am with the leave it as is crowd. I think one way GS forced some people to become members was to prohibit access to certain areas, like the classifieds. You could borrow that carrot or something similar if you are looking for ways to get the count up. Some kind of special rights on the sight . . . whatever they may be.

I agree with wreck and most of the others completely. I wouldn't join a forum without being able to view at least some of the contents, unless there were extenuating circumstances. It wouldn't affect me personally because I'm set up to automatically log in whenever I visit this site, but I think it would severely hamper site growth.

@johnkenn
I think it's a good idea. It will create a tighter community and prevent shit disturbing from other sites. I still think it's funny that the other site's mods sent me messages when I started posting here.

I usually login in case I want to post something. It saves time.

I don't think it's a bad idea to be different. It could be at least worth trying as you can always go back to not requiring a login. I think people like to lurk because they don't want other folks to know how much they're actually on boards like this (myself included sometimes). It's very easy to leave yourself logged in. One of Malcom Gladwell's books talks about how communities and businesses start to experience breakdowns and problems once the number exceeds 300. I'm not suggesting capping membership at all, but 300 - 500 members logged on and actively participating could be a robust and manageable site, thereby attracting others who want to join in to something a little more exclusive.... but then that would have it's own host of issues... Who gets to sign up first? First come first serve, or more "valuable" and "knowledgeable" members.. Membership dues? What I mainly go for is to hear other peoples actual recordings with specific pieces of gear. Shootouts etc... and to learn about new gear/plugs that I have overlooked.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your projected costs annually for something like this?
