400 bucks just seems insane especially when there are other alternatives out there like the peluso one at 106 shipped The original Neumann shock mounts can be found used in good shape for $200-$250. Just search for "Neumann U67 mount" or "Neumann Z48". Add a new set of elastics (~$20) and you're good to go.

I bought this Neumann (vintage style) shock-mount about 15 years ago online.
It was a Red Microphones product (connected to Blue Microphones I believe) and from memory it was around $120 AUD (approx $90 USD).
It uses clamps (no mic screw mount) lined with felt to secure the mic.
It is a very good quality Neumann reproduction shock-mount and would be hard to tell apart from the genuine product.

The RED Shock mount is probably this: vintageking.com/violet-design-vsm-u67-shock-mountBLUE dissolved into BLUE and Violet Microphones. $212.50 still isn’t cheap though.

Yep, looks like the same thing. I tried to find the Red version a few years ago but it had disappeared. Obviously I picked the wrong colour! I bought this Neumann (vintage style) shock-mount about 15 years ago online.

For a $3000 mic, it seems $200-300 for a proper shockmount is not an absurd thought. I too like the rycotes and have many, especially for SDCs, but I also have real Neumann shockmounts for my Neumanns. They are just damn sexy and sometimes, a mic has to look as sexy as it sounds!

The one in your eBay link does not fit a U87i - the vintage U87. They do not utilize a screw in bottom like some of the newer mics. They are held in place with two "body clamps. Vintage u87i's DO utilize the threaded bottom for shock mounts. I have a pair that I'm staring at right now. (yes, vintage u87i's, with battery compartments etc.)

Cool. But evidently not ALL of them. I'd suspect that all the threaded shock mounts are not created equal.

Cool. But evidently not ALL of them. I'd suspect that all the threaded shock mounts are not created equal. Some of the ones that started out with Tuchel connectors and were independently converted to XLR probably lack threads? Anyway, the threads are necessary to use them with the old Neumann swivel mounts.

Oh mine definitely is threaded down there, just the adapter isn't long enough to clear the metal bottom of the shockmount and still screw in. Adding insult to injury Shannon apparently told the seller, who I bought this from, that he could fix this and "got it to fit" by pushing down the felt, he would just "need some time" to work on it- but like I said even with the felt removed its no dice- so just more lies coming out of Mic Rehab . In anycase, Those with u87i's using screw shockmounts, are you using new or old EA- 87 mounts then?
spindrift nailed it on the head for me- the rycote's , although are nice in quality apparently, just aren't sexy. And I have no problem spending a little coin on a quality mount but anything over 350 is just too silly for me, so personally if I'm going the clamp mount route I'm leaning towards the peluso, otherwise there are a few ea87 shocks out there for 175ish used. I happen to already have new shockbands that I can repurpose from this mount that isn't working, so that's a bonus!

I recently acquired a 1972 u87🎉🎉- it came with an aftermarket shock mount but I can’t for the life of me figure how to get them to mate. It appears to be VERY similar to the one found here( good shot of the adapter/couplers in pic 3) www.ebay.com/itm/Metal-Microphone-Shock-Mount-Stand-for-U87-U89i-TLM193-TLM103-TLM127-M149-M150-/132870481535?oid=300505656051However the issue I’m having is this set only has 3 different thread adapters not 4, and what appears to be the longest adapter only screws into the bottom of the 87 alone- not when the mic is on top of the shockmount. So basically it’s not catching because of the clearance of the felt and shockmount. I tried removing the top felt of the shockmount that the body goes on temporarily, but still no dice. Anyone have the skinny on what I need to get this going. Perhaps it’s the lingo (I’m calling them adapters/couplers)but it’s hard to find anything except full blown shock mounts , not other pieces that would probably sort this out.... I think the remedy is obviously a longer threaded bottom thing but going by the pictures mine appears to be the longest one already, so perhaps this mount isn’t compatible 🤷🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️ Anyone care to chime in or at least point me in the direction of shockmount that would work? Paging Ward or yotonic and all the vintage mic wizards 🧙♂️🧙♂️🧙♂️lol I bought that exact generic shockmount off eBay about a month ago and it fits my U87Ai perfectly and the mount is great so far. I’m one of the people that thinks spending $400 on a Neumann mount is ludicrous, especially when it probably costs them less than $35 to make the thing. It’s one of their high margin money making accessories. My Ai came with the Peluso mount with the two felt bands that squeeze the mic in place. I didn’t feel like it was secure enough to hang the mic upside down and it makes it hard to see the Neumann badge when in place. This $35 eBay one feels more secure to me and I like the way it looks better. I don’t care what kind of metal it’s made from as long as it’s not uranium.

real Neumann shockmounts....just damn sexy and sometimes, a mic has to look as sexy as it sounds! Agreed, but I find too much of the time you learn too late the bands are old and the shock does nothing when you orient horizontally for drum OH; super un-sexy, like granny falling out of her panties. The Rycote wins that one day after day hands down. I’d rather go metal over some plastic thing like rycote. The Rycote is much less suspect than any of the cheap mystery metal knockoffs. If you haven't had them side by side for a comparison you should do so. It would take at least the same crushing force to mash a Rycote as it would a metal Neumann. The Rycote seriously might fare better. I despise the screw thread base attachment method on the Neumann too, seems like some very expensive metal threading to wear down or cross-thread.

My Rycotes are sexy as hell, sexiest mic mounts I've ever seen! I guess it's subjective?

We’ve got 3 vintage 87’s that use the screw in method on the bottom. Maybe they are a bit later than the one you have. They definitely all have the battery compartment and little battery check meter on the back. They work with either the 67 style strap mounts or with the bottom screw in mounts. Same here.

How about this Enhanced Audio mount? These look pretty sexy. www.enhancedaudio.ie/product-purchase-rest-revelator-step3.htmlAlso, FWIW, I have a couple of chinese Noy-man knockoffs and think the Rycote mounts are infinitely better.

That does look pretty cool Jesse. I have a Rycote, and I gotta admit it kinda fugly. I'd have trouble putting it on a Neumann myself. I guess that's partly because a manufacturer had sent me the one with the red lobster colored clamps.

Maybe all the crappy Neumann copies have diminished the real thing in my eyes but I like the look of the Rycote, I find it far more appealing than the bent cable look!

For the life of me, I can't figure out 2 things with these: 1. How on earth do they create isolation to shock-proof? and 2. How do keep yourself from screwing in the mounts tight enough to bend the microphone housing?

How do keep yourself from screwing in the mounts tight enough to bend the microphone housing? From memory the idea with these wasn’t to isolate the mic but to couple the mic to the stand. The assumption was you were using a high quality high mass stand ( they do still make those right) and a superior coupling would provide better isolation to a traditional shock or mic mount that was an unpredictable spring. They look cool and again the idea of not needing a locker full of dedicated mounts added to the appeal!

So, does anyone know which worked better for isolation, the original shock mount or this Enhanced Audio mount ?

I decided to go with the rycote- I may snag a used EA87 down the line because it just looks right lol. Was tempted by a couple of used ones, but since I have to send this off for service I find it better to hold off until I know what I'd be working with pricewise.
Should be able to try it out tomorrow before I ship my mic to Tom Onofrio at the end of the week to service/replace the capsule since it failed the breath test etc.

Mine fails the breathe test and sounds killer So did mine but in the end I had to get the capsule reskinned because you cannot totally control how clients interact with the mic. It would completely shut down for 10 seconds or so if you breathed directly on the capsule especially in cooler temperatures. Other times the level would drop a little accompanied by some noise. Even a pop filter wasn’t enough to completely prevent it with some clients.
