Hi Joe, So are the faceplates different now with a selectable slow attack switch? Can you elaborate on this a bit?

Those Ozland guys are literally upside down! 8) Seriously, the exchange rate for us USA guys is awesome with Ozland right now, Joe is a very skilled designer, the deal is way too good to pass up if u got the $!

Hi Joe, So are the faceplates different now with a selectable slow attack switch? Can you elaborate on this a bit? The LA500A face plates are identical except for 2 new 3mm leds and some new text for these leds. See attachments. The slow attack is in a pull switch on the Threshold pot so you can set compression and try the slow attack on and off with one hand. Pulling the threshold pot outwards enables slow attack and lights the orange led. The compressor side chain link is in a pull switch on the Makeup pot so you can set trim output level and link on and off with one hand. Pulling the makeup pot outwards enables link and lights the blue led. All old LA500 can be updated to A versions with a $20 slow attack kit but they will not have the 2 leds mentioned above. Has anyone compared this to the LAZ pro LA3A?

I dont know how it does, but everything i throw through it sounds much better. Its my go to compressor in chain with my 1176 blue stripe. I also use in limiter mode to pass again vocals and sounds so finished. Adds weight, and a silky thing in the highs that my 1176 doesnt. Plus Joe gives you a great customer support. im buying a second kit with slow attack for stereo buss and drums and bass

Anyone using one of these lately? I’m thinking about bailing on the wait for the Stam SA-23a+ and getting one of these kits. Just want a good, versatile opto comp.

Just want a good, versatile opto comp. drbill has a pair and uses them on the regular I believe. I think he likes the Serpent Chimera better and has 4 of those. But still like the LA500. DIYRE's OLA5 is another good option for DIY optical compressor. Skulptor has one too.

They are OK. I don't care for them nearly as much as the Serpent stuff. If you need a cheaper 500 option, Audioscape is releasing a 3a any day now. Or the Chimera (which I DON"T have - I have the rack mount 3as, but they are supposed to be the same aside from the power supply).

I like the Inward Connections Brute, FWIW. My main reference point is a modded LA4A though. Well, that and lots of tube opto flavors over the years.

I use it a good bit... It is not my LA2a clone or my LA4. It is a good comp, but does not add a specific thing. At least I have not really found it's specific sonic stamp. I have been meaning to do a comparison with the same content to both it and the LA2A.

Those JLM transformers have a good amount of sonic colour. I think the LA500s quite versatile, has enough gain to be used as a preamp and doesn't make anything sound bad. But its more a set and forget type of thing rather than something like a distressor. Andrew Scheps and Joe Barresi are fans too.

I'm really just looking for some nice general leveling. And building things is fun. Might go for it, still mulling it over. The Stam SA-23a+ I have on order would be all the optical compression I would ever need but it's already been 1 or 2 years (can't remember) and I don't expect it to be available anytime soon, if ever.

I'd go for it. Be easy to sell if you don't like it. From what I've read it's a bit wooley sounding. If you want something that's smoother but bit grittier then try the DIYRE ola5

LA500A is fairly transparent.... large output transformer contributes some weight though. The HPF options and slow attack mode make it pretty darn versatile, and a killer value especially with the current exchange rate. Pretty easy build and calibration — I’ve built about 40 of them.

I like the Inward Connections Brute, FWIW. You and me both. Been on a gear purge/getting everything in stereo and tested the Brute again before putting it on the chopping block. Hadn't used it in a while but after testing left it in the 500 rack, so great and easy on vocals.

Hi, does anybody knows the attack Time of the JLM LA 500, in normal mode and slow mode?
In normal mode feels like the attack Is a Little bit faster than a la3a

IDK but I got me one comin'. If it's too clean maybe I'll put some hardcore iron in it. I'm crazy like that.

Very nice opto action. I really enjoy it. Used it on lots of things for testing so far, and on vocals for tracking. Not the big gooey mojo of an la-2a but clean, with a little color. It has the same output iron as classic Neve preamps I think. I'd like more. Makes tracking a cinch since it doesn't really work heavy handed. More transparent.

I'd love to hear a comparison with the Audioscape comp, which I'm sure is fantastic.
