Need to buy new air conditioning system for the studio & have decided to go with the mini split system. In so far as noise level is concerned, what do you recommend?
I've heard that Fujitsu & Mitsubishi are the way to go? Will this be OK for tracking? Thanks.

This is where I'm at...I was just looking at minisplits the other day and it looks like it's about 53 DB (Mitsubishi) when fan is running. Now that seems a little too loud for tracking but my space Is airtight so I would not need to run it while I was tracking.

Maybe this is obvious, but can't you just run it heavily before tracking, then turn it off while tracking, and turn it back on during breaks and stuff?

When I built out my soundproof room, I didn't have much room to reroute the air ducting, so I added some circular vents that can be completely closed and sealed. I just close them off if the A/C is too loud for the source and open them back up between takes or whenever.

This is a 26,000 btu wall unit pumping though 35' of serpentined flexible duct and mdf absorbing box(unit is far away to avoid rumble), it's silent, I'm at 29 db with my computer tower making up about 4db at my desk, so 25 is he goal for me here. You could do a lock system also? Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted

I don't think you'd be able to track with one in the room. Well, depending on proximity and mic type, etc. These Mitsubishis aren't too quiet - although they blow some serious air.
I think the other guy had the right idea - keep it running and turn it off when tracking.

I like it a lot, the cotton is way more comfy to work with than rockwool, which is way more comfy to work with than 703, which is way more comfy to work with than loose fiberglass insulation... 8) As far as performance, the Ultratouch cotton out specs all the other stuff by a pretty good margin, especially down low, the pictured AC/bass trap is one of 4 traps in my room, although the walls are also covered with 2 to 3 layers of 1" rockboard 60 everywhere, so they serve that purpose also. Then i have binary slats finishes going on most of the walls, and qrd diffusion going on top of that, the ceiling treatment is still undecided??, i'm probably going to put 2-3" 703 on that to try to disappear the thing, my floors are concrete, i love the sound of concrete.

it's nice to get your AC working quietly enough to not have to worry wether its on or off IMV, i know it's much easier said than done, but it's worth the effort.

My room is actually a finished heat and cooled space on my house...it has two vents for around a 11x23 room. problem is, there aren't any returns. So - inevitably - it gets hot as hell because the hot air has no where to escape. I'm going to put a return in the room here soon, hopefully that will fix the problem. Even if it's noisy, I can turn it off when I track...I'm tired of dealing with uncomfortable, hot female divas.

So today my buddy, who is a AC Salesman for Trane, called me and said he had the opportunity to get a brand new Panasonic Mini Split 12,000 btu for $275. I said I'm on the way...just picked it up. Saved about $2k. Super excited, plus my MK47 is ready and I bought one of Dan's Tube DI's...It was a good day! The Panasonic is super quiet...40/28/20 Db

So - I've had two companies quote around $4-5000 for installing a mini split system...what am I missing here?

I mean, I'm talking about 300 sqft here...not going to spend that much. I see there are cheap ones at Home Depot - anyone have any suggestions?

Very very few studios get HVAC right because all of the charts assume a much more leaky room that requires a lot less ventilation.
You want to move a lot of air and you want to do it at a high enough velocity that a simple muffler system can kill the noise. Most "quiet" AC runs at a very low speed that measures low C-Weighted but produces low frequency rumble that you can't easily absorb.

For my new room I decided to have him tap into the main studio unit's (3-1/2 ton) plenum using a muffler box. $500.00

Agree with $4K-5K range being fairly standard. Satisfaction comparisons between brands all come out in the wash when it's truly apples to apples comparison of the INSTALL QUALITY CONTROL. You are paying primarily for a competent and fully certified tech who knows all the intricacies and pitfalls.
Downside of a mini split: one contractor tells me life expectancy is around 10 years, he sees some failures as early as 6. Seems lower than a traditional system, factor that into the long term cost picture.

I've had two mini-splits in my "basement" (it's on the ground level in flood zone FL) area I share with my studio space.
First one was definitely noisy, the replacement (a Korean brand beginning with a D, I don't even know,) is super quiet on the lowest fan setting. Yes, you'll want to shut it off when you're recording something acoustic, but it's unobtrusive when you're mixing or otherwise working.
Mini-splits are the way to go with studio spaces. You can bear down on the room noise proofing, have satisfactorily quiet spaces with the A/C on, and turn it off with the remote when you record with a live mic in the room.
