I am thinking of getting a 2 bus compressor (I am using SB 4001 at the moment and looking for something with a little more character) and currently trying to make a decision between API 2500 and RND MBP. For those who have used or still using this compressor what are your thoughts? I've heard a few clips on the purple site and kinda liked it but I can't trust my ears enough to make a decision on this so please HELP ME!

I don't know, but I really want an API2500. It may be one of the next large purchases I make in the future.

the API2500 is not widely accepted as a stereo buss master compressor but is commonplace as a drum buss comp. for drums, it adds a lot of dynamic control but retains the punch due it's "tone" choices and ability to choose knee and feedback or feed forward.
It's strength as a drum buss comp is it's weakness as a 2 buss comp: It doesn't quite squish the living hell out of the transients and dynamics for LOUDER mixes but the treatment it gives drums allows them to maintain their presence in a final mix when everything is being squeezed into the 'fighting for headroom' dynamicless squish.

Thank you so much for your thoughts guys!! I live in NZ and it's extremely difficult to demo stuffs here.. so I have to make a decision based on others' opinions and need people who I can trust (I am talking to you lovely people on RGO Hmm.. so I am guessing that API 2500 is more suitable for drum bus processing rather than on 2 bus.. Thank you for sharing ward that was really interesting! After hearing from ward I am leaning towards getting the TSL-3 but I can't find much information about it for some reason.. Argh.. I wish I was rich enough to get everything I want

I used the 2500 quite a bit on drums and occasionally on 2-bus instead of the SLL when i was in college. I had been lusting for one since, because it seemed to always work for me in either of those positions and I like compression for both. Recently I worked a trade for one, right after grabbing a pair of Tonelux TX5C comps (similar features and same designer). I've only used it in a couple test situations since I've owned it, and just got it fully integrated into my patchbay system. I should have some more time for testing over the next month to see if I'll keep the Tonelux and API, or sell one of them. Anyway, let me know if you want something processed.

Thank you so much for your generous offer jcoutu1!! I love this forum I did some readings on TX5C and it looks really interesting + it's really affordable! Please let me know how you feel about TX5C as I am always interested in a good 500 series compressors

Just an update: Decided to pull the trigger on API 2500 If I don't like it I will sell it and get TSL-3 instead I guess.. API 2500 seems to hold its value pretty well anyway!

So can someone clarify tonelux tx5c and api 2500. Are they the same designer/inventor or are they just using similar design construction ideas? Has anyone used the tonelux tx5c Asti looks like an interesting beast. It also looks like a learning curve on how to use all of its features.

Has anyone used the tonelux tx5c Asti looks like an interesting beast. It also looks like a learning curve on how to use all of its features. Paul Wolff designed the 2500 when he was at API then the Tonelux compressor for their V-Rack system age starting Tonelux. The TX5C is supposed to be the same design just converted to 500 series. I haven't dug into them too much yet, but the features of the 2500 and TX5C are very similar. I don't see the learning curve being any different between the two. A couple things that come into play for me are settings and feel. The Tonelux doesn't feel as robust as the API. It seems like PMI products just don't feel as solid as other stuff on the market from my experience with the TX5C and the Trident 80B channel strip reissue. The knobs just feel a little light in my hands and matching sides with such small, lightweight knobs detracts from the experience. With the API being strictly stereo, matching settings is less of an issue. I guess there is just a tradeoff for mono flexibility with the Tonelux vs. the true stereo nature of the API.
