Man. Let me tell you. Early on in my recording days I was easily impressed by any mic no matter how bad it was. I mean, they all beat the radio shack ten dollar PC mic I had. Then you start to wonder how to get your recordings to sound "better". Many will tell you to practice, learn how to use the equipment etc, and all of that is true... but the equipment does matter. I have collected a small amount of really nice gear over the years now, and I really can appreciate it.
Two pieces that I just used that I really feel "wow" about when listening back are my Coles 4038 and Hardy M-2 preamps. I've been slowly trying to compile an EP's worth of (mainly)Ukulele holiday tunes and by that I mean I did one in 2017 and one this week. It's been very difficult with my health issues lately to play any guitar. I had to cut back teaching and quit my gigs. No health insurance and trying to figure all this out is tough. I had to play this week though or I would lose my mind with all that is going on in my life right now. Ukulele is a little easier on my hands so I chose that. So here is a rough mix of a mostly tracked Blue Christmas.
I love how rich and velvety the Coles is, without being overly smooth or dull. Ribbons are great and all, but the Coles is really king in a lot of situations I think.
Match that with the Hardy M-2 and you get nice clean gain and all that the mic is saying is coming through.
Gotta control some low mids but overall this sound, to me, is so nice.

Nice! Where's Elvis? Thanks! He unfortunately left the building... his parting words were "you're no James Burton"
Can't win em all, I guess.

This would work great as background music for my Surfin' Santa party.

This would work great as background music for my Surfin' Santa party. As a jazz man, I would be honored. My life is playing in the background, and I don't think I'd have it any other way.

Sounds great. The last couple of albums we did I used the Coles on vocals with a Seventh Circle Audio J99 which is a Hardy/Jensen Twin Servo style pre so probably similar to your M2 but with a second 990 opamp and more gain. One artist liked the Coles so much he actually bought one. He emailed me later asking for tips on how to get the vocal sound like was on his album. I said he would need to find a Twin Servo, a genuine EMT 140 plate reverb and a Neve 1081 style EQ. I haven't heard anything from him since!

Lovely music for my ears! My 4038s are never allowed to rest in the studio. They usually go through my 2 Neve 33115. Should give them some kind of bonus to show my appreciation (maybe adding a few more 4038s to increase the family feeling). Thanks for sharing Mister Chase

I was dwelling on a couple of really cringey collaborations so this is a nice antidote to all that, a mint chocolate to get out of my sour aftertaste. Sounds really nice.
Coles has got to be one of those mics that no one could argue with, dream gear.

I just used a pair of Coles 4038 and a Heiserman H-47tube on my 122 Leslie hooked to my Hammond B-3. I posted a link in the "What are you working on" forum if you're interested.
