Big Kilpsch are fun, but they are even better if you upgrade the drivers and dampen the horns! There are a couple of companies specializing in Klipsch upgrades, but simply screwing in a stock Radian one inch can make a huge difference! Yeah, mine have all the driver and crossover upgrades, and the horns are moved to the front panel rather than inside. The new A-55-G drivers are hands down better than the best of the old ones, the distortion spec is vastly lower, and they are instantly less 'shouty' because of it. I don't feel any need to change out the mid and top drivers and horns to totally different types. I can see it making a big difference if you go loud normally, I don't. I kinda want to build some Quarter Pie bass horns, but since they are 4x4 feet apiece.....I have no space for them. Loud horn bass response down to 51Hz with a couple watts!

It’s always fun to bring out the TAD exclusive clones and the little 25watt Van Alstine Dynaco! It always amazes me that people think you always need big power! That said you will never get me to give up the JW Modded 555!

So I have Focal 6be's and JBL 306P MkII here in the studio and JBL 308P MkII in the Hi-Fi room with a Audio-Technica AT-LP7 for the wife..... The JBL's have great bottom ... !!! super good super solid clean and tight for a ported speaker. Mids are natural and decently clear the highs are forward and present. the -2 HF trim switch on the back gives you what you need on the highs for hours of listening for near field (my wife prefers them bright). Some may prefer the JBL for a more traditional speaker sound like my wife but she does say my 6be's sound more detailed and hyper imaging clear top to bottom front to back... There is a bit of his on the tweeter on the JBL but less with the -2db for sure. You can tell the amps on the Focal are better(less grainy) but we both agree 300 for the JBL to 3000 for the Focal doesn't buy you much now a-days ! I can mix on the JBL , no issue at all, I use them for tracking and processing when I swing to the rack. John

How many people are in a ROOM that 30 can be heard properly in? Very very few, if nearly none. It does amaze me the 705’s beat the lsr28p’s in many regards. I had to hear it to believe it. Very hard to think I could step down in driver size without losing something; really I gained more in my space. The new JBL woofers are excellent. I can often hear a too high hpf on low tuned kicks even on 6.5” two way hifi speakers in a domestic room. Some guys will slap one on a 65hz tuned kick to match the rolloff of their small monitors. They deprive it of weight to avoid low end issues to slam everything into limiters after weakening it even more so with 10 bad plugins in a row. Some of that is DSP with JBL. There's some handy DSP crossover chips available now that have built in EQ, delay, etc. They make it pretty easy to match driver delay and create a ridiculously flat speaker. Speaking of great woofers, SB makes one out of aluminum but it has creases in it to reduce the usual metal cone breakup. It has the low distortion of a metal cone, but without the ragged break-up. Burchardt uses them. Great woofers and cheap too.
