Have you tried the wa412 Ward ? Yes. Enough for my needs. Thanks, next.

Has anyone ever modded one of these? And I don't mean just op amps. Is there any truth to the Revive Audio mod of swapping caps? Like do they not use the same caps and resistors as CAPI stuff?

Can I ask why you'd need another power supply for some CAPI modules? You could just swap in the mic preamps to record and then swap in your other cards for mixing. Everything is already being used up by stuff I couldn't live without while tracking! I guess I could always get a bigger lunchbox and sell the one I currently own...but even then it would be quite a bit more expensive than getting the Warm, which would probably be used about twice a year ( I don't do that much remote drum tracking) . If you got vp28s you could use them for mixing too as line amps. A capi 11 slot rack is pretty darn affordable

To each their own, I have had 2 wa12s and didn’t think there was anything cheap about its feel or performance, quite the opposite I was also impressed with the heft due to the transformers.
I mostly used it on drums and was pleased with results.
I am more and more sensitive to the law of diminishing returns with gear. I can appreciate more expensive gear may be better: how much better vs it’s increased cost is what I wonder about.
If price sensitivity is high, then I guess you lean towards the Warm or something used or if greater cost doesn’t matter you have options there too.
Not in any way putting down Capi, as I have only heard great things about them.

I can get the Warm for half that.

More and more of us are feeling the pinch . . . so no shame in this being an important part of the decision making process.

Knobs and pots are different, pots all have a rated life cycle, any pot will at sometime wear out no matter what, cheap ones faster than expensive ones. It becomes a real PITA down the road when a manufacturer discontinues a pot that is PCB mounted and has custom spaced pins. You can have custom pots made but a single one will cost more than a Warm.

I'm almost thinking I might just stick to the Apogee preamps for drums for these couple projects and wait until I can get something better.

Just a left-field suggestion but I use Yamaha MLA8 for my drum preamps. They can easily be found under $300. Maybe if you're used to API preamps on drums, this would not be the same, but if you need something that "just works" this is my personal answer.
Yes, one day I will have all discrete pres for everything but in reality that could be a long way off.
Having great mics and a well-tuned drum set with good cymbals is 90% of the problem anyway. Not accounting for the drummer, of course. We will assume she's good.

Roll your own.

Roll your own. That is my plan! I was looking at the Whistle Rock PCB's. I could do a 6 channel in 1 RU of 312 circuits with my preferred transformers. Swap op amps if needed. Or just a whole bunch of dogears IA-N3 builds, we'll see how those go

CAPI VP28 is like a Vintage API and a Vintage Neve in one... Super fast, punchy and open but larger then life and smooth like a Neve. It's my desert Island pre-amp I would absolutely sell everything and have a console of these.

Given what you’re saying, if you’re really able to get the 412 for 50% off, I’d really consider going that route. You could probably resell it at the end of the project without losing much of anything, and it’d probably be nicer than using the Ensemble pres for drums.

In that case why not just buy used wa12 and sell them later if you wish. ‘Tis the beauty of buying preowned gear!

Supply chains have been tricky and our demand is way up. Saying I'm blessed is an understatement. We should have another batch of inputs in before the end of this coming week.

Haha I am guilty of bird doggin the CAPI store all day for the kits I'm after. I snagged the last two VP28 litz the other day, 10 keyed in my cc# so fast like a veteran grocery checker lol. Shoulda grabbed the 312DIs when there was 20 of them, poof they're gone.
